This is the official end to democracy in Türkiye. The main opposition party, the founding party of the Turkish Republic, is taken over by the regime, and the new puppet “leader” is installed by Erdogan. If European leaders continue their dealings with Erdogan as if it is still business as usual, they will be partners in crime and will bear the burden of shame.

The latest police escalation against @herkesicinCHP headquarters is beyond alarming. This further attempt to intimidate the democratic opposition is unacceptable and further undermines the rule of law in Türkiye. We stand with CHP, its leader @eczozgurozel, and all those forces in Türkiye defending freedom, justice and democracy.

In this short video, I explain what drove yesterday’s court decision targeting the CHP leadership, why it is happening now, and what it means for Turkey’s political future. A few key points: • The ruling could pave the way for the return of former CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who lost every major election during his 13 years at the helm of the party — precisely what makes him a convenient opponent for Erdogan. • Erdogan knows he can no longer win genuinely free and fair elections. And he realized that jailing Ekrem Imamoglu was not enough, because Ozgur Ozel kept pushing back relentlessly, holding more than 100 rallies across the country. • But this is about more than consolidating power. The CHP is not just another opposition party. It was founded by Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. By throwing the CHP into chaos, Erdogan is also trying to weaken Atatürk’s legacy and the powerful connection the party still has with millions of Turks. • The days ahead will be extremely difficult for the CHP. But things may not unfold as smoothly for Erdogan as he hopes. Listen here 👇

📌 After the annulment of the #CHP Istanbul congress and the closure of #Bilgi University, #Turkey’s trajectory enters a new phase of analysis. 🇹🇷 Although it has never been solely about domestic politics, the international environment is now becoming increasingly important for understanding how and why these decisions are possible. Turkey’s role in #NATO, #European defense, regional security, energy, and connectivity gives Ankara significant strategic weight, especially ahead of the 2026 NATO Summit in #Ankara. The difficult question, mainly for #Europe but NATO as well, is how to continue working with a strategic ally, Turkey, without turning strategic necessity into a geopolitical shield for domestic authoritarianism. This is becoming one of the central tensions in relations with Turkey.

In #Turkey: 2023 @herkesicinCHP congress voided & CHP re-shaped to suit the country’s leadership. When scared of CHP > put their lead candidate in jail > then kill the party itself. Autocracy at its worst, a day after @vonderleyen called #Erdogan & weeks before @NATO summit.

Now #Turkey’s judiciary neutered the main opposition #CHP. Giving #Ankara a political position in #Europe’s security policies would 1) Bless Turkey’s autocratic gouvernance & 2) Endanger Europe’s own democracy. Better limit defense deals at industry level. #DemocracyMatters

Turkey is a NATO partner, an EU candidate country and a Council of Europe member. That is exactly why Europe cannot look away. As EDP Secretary General @sandrogozi said, “strategic cooperation with Turkey cannot mean democratic silence.” Courts cannot be used to redesign the opposition, silence elected leaders, pressure universities or intimidate journalists. Erdoğan’s assault on democracy must have political consequences.

The Erdogan regime is not only trying to silence @eczozgurozel and @herkesicinCHP. It is trying to crush the Turkish people’s hopes for freedom, justice and progress. We will stand with the CHP until Türkiye returns to the European path that its citizens deserve.

Overruling the democratic choice by CHP delegates at the 2023 party congress is an attack on political pluralism. We stand in solidarity with the elected CHP leadership & those defending democracy, rule of law and political freedom in Türkiye 🇹🇷 Europe cannot stay silent!

To make everything even more outrageous, the Turkish authorities -through this weaponization of the justice- pretend to actually appoint the "new" leader of the opposition as the trustee of the century-old CHP. It's a mockery of a democratic system.

With the decision of "absolute nullity" on the congress of CHP, Atatürk's party, we enter into a dark era in Türkiye. It's a well prepared plan to eliminate the main opposition party. It's a blueprint of a fully authoritarian system. The EU can't be blind nor silent anymore.
