In Canada, we don’t want elected officials drawing their own election maps. Instead, governments give independent commissions the job of drawing maps that reflect population trends while also respecting the challenges of representing diverse, rural and remote communities. /3

Each time Alberta has established an Electoral Boundaries Commission to redraw election maps the government has accepted the commission’s majority report, so I was surprised and disappointed to learn that a committee of MLAs has instead been tasked with creating a new map. /1

There is a reason that we do not have MLAs decide on electoral boundaries. Tossing out the Electoral Boundaries Commission and replacing it with a UCP-dominated committee is not just a bad idea. It is really bad for democracy. Ask the US, ask Hungary. This is not normal!

Now he's on the record. I disagree with his stance but at least now we can say with certainty that he would run roughshod over the provs & Indigenous communities, if he were PM. This should alarm Cdns who think there needs to be meaningful engagement with those impacted.

*NEW* The Wetaskiwin Hospital OBGYN Unit will be CLOSED from 5pm Dec 17th until 8am Dec 18th. OBGYN Unit will then be downgraded to Level 1A ONLY Until Dec 20th. Closure due to no physicians or other clinical staffing available. All OBGYN Cases will be diverted by EHS EMS to Grey Nuns (57KM), University of Alberta (67KM) or Misericordia (77KM) depending on needs. /10
