The algorithm on this app frequently favors binary reactions to art, whether that’s super positive or very negative, and I find my own reactions to art to be really complicated sometimes. I miss the days when online discourse allowed for more complex discussions.

it’s so much easier (and more fun!) to write a scathing review of a film than to write something that mines generative meaning and value and insight from an imperfect artwork. the art/film analysis that really inspires me to see the world differently is usually that latter kind.

Apparently someone "spoiled" this on the red carpet tonight. Don't worry, it's not a spoiler, I promise. Just a normal part of the film. But I'm forced to be vague because the studio is marketing it as a major twist, when anyone who could possibly care has already figured it out.

Critiquing Emily Wilson without having read her translation and without at least a working knowledge of previous translations of The Odyssey is lazy, irresponsible, illogical, and bordering on insanity.

@kvnieight @OILMAN24x7 If Nolan didn’t base his screenplay on her translation, then I stand corrected. However, it still doesn’t negate the fact that Emily Wilson is entitled to give her opinion on Nolan’s film. I feel like people are attacking her just because she doesn’t like the film. It’s gross.

@Danimalish @OILMAN24x7 Nolan also has never met her nor ever contacted her. And she herself admitted this before the film released in an interview. If Nolan cared or actually based it on her book he would have credited thw book like he credited American Prometheus.

Many of the characters had a definite arc and the aspects of guilt, torment and psychological aspects of war on men were well presented..it is Nolan's generosity that he doesn't return back the abuses to such people..she's like one of the evil suitors barking at empty galleries and probably peeved at being ignored in the end credits of the film for being a translator

@Danimalish Most of her critiques are wrong though. She has misread most of the film and she has no right to be bitter and personal towards Nolan. She was being rude not normal. She was snarky. And had pathetic reductive reading of the roles played by ppl of color.

I didn’t want to insinuate that Nolan doesn’t embrace the idea of the Gods. I think my main criticism is that Nolan does shy away a little bit from the spirituality of the poem. Athena is more of a presence in the poem, actively steering him toward moral choices, where she’s a bit more passive in the film. As one example. The original poem was more about spiritual awakening, whereas Nolan’s film is more about moral reckoning. Again, this is not even necessarily a negative critique in my opinion, but an observation of how Nolan interpreted the text.

@Danimalish @comradejosh7 The characters constantly change their approach ans behaviour after hearing Zeus’s thunder. Calypso and suitors mainly. He touches athena’s hand she was not just in his mind. Ppl project stuff on nolan when he in reality he embraced the supernatural in his own way.

Easy. Nolan unequivocally makes the gods deterministic forces of nature. He completely rips the film of its spirituality as a result, which is ironic given that he seems intent on exploring morality. It goes beyond secular and becomes far too overly logical and “rational”.

I’ve spent my share of time defending Wilson as a scholar, but I can’t say quite as much for her film criticism. I don’t know how anyone leaves the theatre believing ‘there are no gods’ just because they weren’t depicted in person.

I’ve now seen The Odyssey three times (due to pre-booked tickets) and I’ve liked it less and less upon each viewing. I guess a good thing though is that it’s also made me want to watch more Kurosawa and Tarkovsky films. Ya know, real epics.
