still think anybody new-ish to TV writing should study procedurals/network dramas. even if they’re not what you’re setting out to write. structure, pacing, writing to and out of act breaks, stakes and how to escalate them, etc etc etc those shows are SO good at that stuff.

Dare I say I largely agree. With plenty of exceptions of course. And I will say a "beloved" book or popular book does not make it a great book (Hi, Twilight).

When I was working on Sideways (which was adapted from a book), I asked the director, Alexander if the book were any good. "No it sucks. You don't adapt great books. You adapt shitty books that have an interesting premise, or a kernel of something that you can exploit and improve. Good books don't make good movies. You have to build a screenplay from the ground up. And nobody is gonna be mad at me for changing the details of a Rex Pickett novel. @TomAandTom1 Disagree on the skewing too young part. I totally believe it skewed too young. The protagonist is in HS & super wokey, but they're trying to get the 90s millennial fans. So if it seemed TOO Gen Z, it would skew too young for what they want.
