Territori dhe qendrat kryesore Straboni përshkruan hapësirat e Dardanisë si një tokë të gjerë, të pasur me male, lumenj dhe minerale: “Dardanët banojnë mbi Maqedoninë dhe kanë shumë pasuri nëntokësore.” (Straboni, Gjeografia, VII, 5, 6) Qendrat më të rëndësishme përfshinin: Damastionin qyteti i arit dhe argjendit, Scupin (Shkupi i sotëm), Naissusin (Nishi i sotëm), Ulpianën (afër Prishtinës, e rëndësishme në periudhën romake). Fuqia ushtarake dhe politike Dardanët njiheshin për ushtritë e tyre të mëdha dhe të organizuara. Polibi dhe autorë të tjerë theksojnë se ata shpesh rrezikonin Maqedoninë: “Dardanët, një popull i fuqishëm, ishin gjithmonë rrezik për maqedonasit.” (Polibi, Historitë, VIII) Në disa raste, burimet thonë se ata mund të nxirrnin mbi 20.000 luftëtarë në një fushatë të vetme. Lidhja me Trojën Në mitologji, Dardani, themeloi qytetin Dardania në Troade. Ky emër i përbashkët tregon lidhjen midis Dardanëve ballkanikë dhe Trojës se vogel. “Dardani ndërtoi qytetin që mori emrin e tij dhe tërë vendin e quajti Dardani.” (Dionisi i Halikarnasit, Antikitetet Romake, I, 61) Ky mit përfaqëson një kujtesë historike të lëvizjeve pellazge drejt trojes së Vogël. Luftërat me Romën Dardanët u përballën me Romën në disa fushata. Appiani përmend betejat e ashpra: “Dardanët ishin të fortë dhe të vështirë për t’u nënshtruar.” (Appiani, Illyrike) Ata u mundën përfundimisht nga Marcus Licinius Crassus (29–28 p.K.), por edhe nën Romë, provinca e Dardanisë mbeti një zonë me rëndësi strategjike dhe ekonomike. Trashëgimia dhe vazhdimësia Emri dhe identiteti i Dardanëve mbijetuan edhe në periudhën e vonë romake e bizantine. Provinca e Dardanisë përmendet deri në shek. VI, kur ishte pjesë e perandorisë së Justinianit, i cili vetë kishte origjinë nga këto anë. Studiues modernë i konsiderojnë Dardanët si një nga fiset kryesore që kontribuan në formimin e identitetit etnik shqiptar.
