@Ruhichess @starnamedstork ?! My heart rate remains exactly the same as resting, around 55-60, when I play. When running it’s normally 170ish. I find it extremely hard to believe it’s so different for other people.

“Thousands of calories”
Did you know that playing chess burns 1000 calories per hour? Competitive chess players burn 6000 calories per day. Chess players burn as many calories as marathon runners. And this is all backed by science, according to several sources.
Of course, how could chess not burn calories? The brain is the most energy-expensive organ in the human body, and chess makes your brain burn like a stove. It all makes sense… except it’s not true: it is just typical Internet bunk spreading like wildfire.
Imagine if it were true. Chess players would have to eat like bodybuilders during the bulking phase, and they would still lose about 20 pounds per month. Does this sound plausible?
So what about the science? How can anyone deny science? That’s the thing, there is no such science. It is an invention of the media: confusing rumor and anecdote with truth, filling gaps and jumping to conclusions from misunderstood science.
Then, where does this myth come from? Stanford professor Robert Sapolsky is often cited and credited with this theory. But in fact, Sapolsky never said such a thing. In his book, "Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers", Sapolsky cites a few old studies that showed that different physiological measures such as heart rate and blood pressure are similar during chess competition and physical exercise.
Subsequent studies showed that chess players have a similar profile of stress hormones as well as comparable peaks of testosterone. In other words, the physiology of chess players resembles that of other sportspeople.
This is where the calorie-burning figure was inferred from. The problem with this extrapolation is twofold: For one, the calculation was done wrong: chess players don’t have such peaks of stress throughout the game but only during key moments such as "time trouble".
Secondly, and more importantly, cardiac output and stress hormones will facilitate energy mobilization, but they won’t burn many calories per se. Most of the calories during exercise are burned by muscle cells during muscle contraction.
In other words, cardiac output and stress hormones don’t burn that many calories. Your brain will consume more calories when active, but the amount is nowhere near 1000 per hour.
Then why do some chess players report weight loss during tournaments? Chess players don’t eat very much during the game, nor can they feast right before the game. They typically eat light food. In the morning, they walk or exercise, and their activity tends to be greater than usual overall. If you combine this with the few extra calories you burn from competition compared to regular training, you may lose some weight, mostly in the form of fluids.
In conclusion, I hate to break it on you guys but you're not gonna get a beach body by playing chess. Chess is a healthy activity, but some physical exercise and good eating habits won't hurt either.
