Although, Atkinson "only" won his primary by 12 against a weak opponent in 2024. Guessing he thought he was gonna lose his DEM primary this year with a lot of insurgent progressivism lately.

WHOA - conservative DEM Lucas Atkinson has switched parties to run as a Republican this year. Atkinson won re-election by 17.5% in 2024 while President Trump carried his seat by 9.4%. He's the most conservative Democrat in the SC House. projects.statenavigate.com/districts/stat… projects.statenavigate.com/w-nominate/sta…

@asymmetricinfo @conor64 The infectious disease people were very competent during the pandemic. Some people just wanted permission to act like brats and they still can’t get over being told to show some responsibility

@conor64 I already had deep distrust of public health because on I wrote about, like obesity, the thinking was both wishful and ideologically motivated. But I assumed the infectious disease people were still hypercompetent. The pandemic cured that delusion.

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

@JakeSherman That’s a large partisan bias for you, probably should take some time to reflect on what you’ve done to earn it.

I would have respectfully disagreed, but you came out swinging, so I'll say this - it's a retarded position to contend that this is substantive work. The objective of the project wasn't to solve trash, it was political grandstanding. The solution was a shameful side effect of a profession that's rampant with the plague of " get paid for the attempt, not the result". The market pays you carry for taking risk, not making a ppt. But hey, anyone who solves problems by simply throwing more compute at it, probably does like the idea of money being spent on LLM garbage. You probably think a human spent hours pondering over that garbage. I hope your employer continues to employ you, instead of leveraging their edge in MSR, so we can continue eating your lunch.

Actor Vince Vaughn calls out late-night comedians, says people like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and others have all become the “SAME SHOW.” “It stopped being funny, and it started feeling like I was in a f*cking class I didn’t want to take.” THEO VON: “A lot of the late shows have struggled.” VINCE VAUGHN: “Oh, bro.” THEO: “Because… the only person they could make fun of at a certain point was just like white redneck kind of people. And it f*cking tanked [ratings].” VINCE: “I think that the talk shows, to a large part, became really agenda-based.” “They were gonna evangelize people to what they thought… It felt like they had an agenda.” “It stopped being funny, and it started feeling like I was in a f*cking class I didn’t want to take.” “They all became the same show.” “And they all became so about their politics and who’s good and who’s bad.” “Imagine sitting next to someone like that on a f*cking plane. You’d be like, how do I get out of this f*cking seat?” THEO: “I would FART right next to them.” VINCE: “You’d fart your way out of it?” THEO: “Yeah, I would. I would for sure.”

I asked Thune if Republicans commit to abiding by the parliamentarian’s advice on which parts of SAVE America Act are valid in reconciliation. He says it’ll be an “iterative process” à la big beautiful bill. “Obviously the parliamentarian has a role to play in that process. And in the past, we have respected it. And I would expect we would do that,” Thune says.
