This is the wrong story. We are not facing an anti-Jewish pogrom in NYC. My Jewish friends mostly voted for the socialists. Darializa Chevalier is bad because she embraces socialist economics, is anti-prison, and anti-policing. She's a godsend to the Republican Party. I said most of my Jewish friends voted for them, but I also know Jews who are convinced they are raging antisemites. I simply don't see it. Mamdani has plenty of Jewish top staffers, including his deputy mayor for operations and his police commissioner. He was raised by parents ensconced in the worlds of academia and film. He went to Bronx Science. These are not bastions of antisemitism. Of course, he is anti-Israel. Lots of lefties, including lots of lefty Jews, are anti-Israel. Some of the anti-Israel sentiment in America (on both left and right) is fed by antisemitism, but most is not. When I talk to Jewish friends shocked by the bombing of Gaza, they aren't being antisemitic! You can point out that Israel is defending itself, but they'll respond that self-defense does not justify the extreme violence they've seen. You can point out that there are worse horrors in the world (Russia vs Ukraine, Ethiopia vs Tigray, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar), but those aren't supported by US aid. I think the political class's obsession with Netanyahu's government is bad for America, but it's our current political reality. And being angry at Israel doesn't automatically make one an antisemite.
