Solving the housing crisis means focussing on who owns our current homes, and in whose interests. Our new report for @jrf_uk makes the case that shifting the ownership of homes is as important as new construction. 🧵below on why and how .. jrf.org.uk/report/making-…

In 2016 changes to how landlords' mortgage interest is taxed were introduced to level the playing field for first-time buyers. But new data today from Hamptons reveals a poorly designed system is allowing landlords to set up companies to avoid paying tax on mortgage interest🧵

📈 Just over a week until the Budget, and energy debt is at an all time high with 3.1 million households unable to keep their homes adequately warm. Energy bills are £600 higher on average than before the 2021/22 energy affordability crisis. 🧵

Rents have increased by a fifth in recent years since Local Housing Housing allowance was frozen, up £210 a month!! The strain of this freeze on private renters is immense; in April around 40% of private renters in receipt of LHA said they didn't have enough to cover rent.

Brilliant research by @J_Elliott94 @DarrenBaxter The Chancellor can increases taxes on landlords at the Budget and ignore the crowing from landlords about how this will hurt renters. Actually - it will help continue to rebalance our housing system and make society fairer.
Joseph Elliott@J_Elliott94

New report: Taxing landlords more is good, actually. Since 2016, tax reforms helped slash the growth of the private rented sector and boosted first-time buyers—without hurting existing tenants. A big housing story hiding in plain sight? ⬇️

NEW analysis out today from @jrf_uk & @CentreProPolicy shows that improving paternity leave poses significant growth benefits to the UK economy. Giving families more choice over who cares for babies could have an economy-wide benefit of £2.8bn ft.com/content/5c4a86…

Absolutely devastating increase in service charge from £94/month to £646/month, roughly 2% to 10% of take-home earnings for the average shared owner BEFORE hikes in mortgage, rent and wider bills. Honestly this is such a scandal, some shared owners being absolutely screwed.⬇️

Lewis bought his flat from a shared-ownership scheme run by a housing association - but rising service charges mean he's now trapped in a home he cannot afford. #london

@SCP_Hughes If you buy unconsented land with a view to obtaining planning permission, you'll pay relatively less to reflect the risk. It's that as yet unrealised uplift that removing hope value from CPO is proposing to capture and turn into infrastructure.

The Planning & Infrastructure Bill is good legislation overall. But the clauses on compulsory purchase are worrying. They facilitate councils' expropriating people's homes at less than the value of their mortgages, potentially condemning them to financial ruin. This is not how the government of a free country should treat its people. Me in @CapX: capx.co/how-not-to-fix…
