Kunt u ‘s nachts de slaap nog vatten na al die zware oorlogstaal? Zou u zelf op de eerste rij gaan vechten voor een ideaal dat niet eens het uwe is? Zou u uw kinderen opofferen voor het meest corrupte regime ter wereld dat niet echt een schone lei heeft wat betreft het omgaan met zijn eigen inwoners (u bent historicus, dus u zou moeten weten wat er een decennium geleden met de Russische inwoners in Oekraïne gebeurd is)? Mijn belangrijkste vraag echter, die al jaren onbeantwoord blijft, is deze: waarom zie ik niemand hemel en aarde verzetten om vredesgesprekken aan te gaan? Iemand die geen zin heeft om België te veroveren, maar wel om zijn territorium te verdedigen. Dus waarom moeten wij als klein Belgenland meegesleurd worden in die oorlog? Ik behaalde 20 jaar gelden mijn master Vertaler Russisch en ik heb een zeer bescheiden idee van wat er mogelijk is. De Russen die ik ken, hebben namelijk een verhaal dat haaks staat op onze perceptie (ik doel op de perceptie van onze gesubsidieerde mediakanalen). Een oorlog kent enkel verliezers, vooral een oorlog die niet de onze hoeft te zijn. En zeg nu zelf: ‘mir’ (vrede), klinkt toch beter dan ‘vojna’ (oorlog)? Zou u zelf gaan vechten voor uw oorlogsideaal of stuurt u liever nobele onbekende landgenoten als kanonnenvoer naar een land dat het zelf niet zo nauw neemt met het leven van zijn eigen landgenoten? Kan u het aan dat een steeds groter deel van uw bevolking beroep moet doen op de voedselbank terwijl u miljarden naar een uithoek buiten Europa stuurt (die meteen de lucht ingeblazen worden of verdwijnen in de bodemloze zakken van corrupte politici)? Zou het niet veel fijner zijn om de geschiedenis in te gaan als de natie die bemiddelde en de oorlog stopte? Ik doe niet mee, beste premier. Mijn kinderen en mijn man ook niet. Heeft u het boek ‘Bij gebrek aan beter’ van Diedert de Wagt al gelezen? Deze historicus deed 10 jaar lang onderzoek en maakte gebruik van meer dan 2000 bronnen om historische gebeurtenissen zoals oorlogen van de laatste decennia correct te kaderen. Het is een aanrader. Ik druk u alvast op het hart dat niets is wat het lijkt, maar dat weet u vast al.
