🚨This is an invaluable resource for many a journalist and researcher - utterly non partisan but a source for transparency about money in politics now under financial threat
Daniel Lippman@dlippman

SCOOP: OpenSecrets, the nonpartisan money-in-politics research nonprofit, laid off 10 employees yesterday due to financial difficulties. Much of the research team were among the casualties, which constituted around a third of the group’s total headcount. politico.com/newsletters/pl…

This comes as initiatives are looking to revive struggling local newsrooms. “What could that $6 million have done if it was dedicated to local quality journalism?” wondered Anna Brugmann of Rebuild Local News. You can read the story here on CJR! cjr.org/tow_center/cou…

Some of the ads (like the ones shown here) were explicitly political ads aiming to mobilize votes for Democratic candidates.

Final note: I interpret what @NateSilver538 was doing here as old-school blogging. He noticed an interesting pattern in the polling data, had an intuition about what might be behind it, and ran a quick-and-dirty analysis to check. I'm all for that! And I intend this thread in the same spirit.

So this was an interesting finding from @NateSilver538, but one I found odd because @BLS_gov publishes CPI for regions (and for some metro areas) but not for states. So I dug into it a bit, and there's less here than meets the eye.
Nate Silver@NateSilver538

There are some confounders here, but the inflation thing is actually statistically significant! Each additional $100 of inflation in a state since January 2021 predicts a further 1.6 swing against Harris in our polling average vs. the Biden-Trump margin in 2020.

Courier Newsroom spent big on a Meta ad blitz in October. Combined, the progressive “newsroom”’s over $6 million ad spend on Meta was second only to the Trump and Harris official campaigns. From @TowCenter cjr.org/tow_center/cou…

@MishaTeplitskiy @profjamesevans This sounds great! Would you mind sharing what dataset you’re using? Or if anybody has a good one that they’ve tried this with I’d be excited to see it.

💡Class activity idea to teach students about overfitting / p-hacking in a fun (???) way: 1. Give them a small dataset with tons of predictors 2. Ask them to find the most "counterintuitive story" where p < 0.05 3. Surprise them with a holdout set (!!!) and test story Has anyone tried this? What dataset did you use? Tips/tricks? -

There is more to say, but for now let me tell you how proud I am of our @columbiajourn students, whom I've watched report non-stop for days, sleep on floors, support one another & give their all to bearing witness under dire conditions: pulitzer.org/news/statement… @PulitzerPrizes

My @columbiajourn students are out reporting non-stop: working sources they've built over months, navigating the campus unlike any outsider, and adding much-needed context, humanity and depth to coverage. If you're an editor looking to commission them, get in touch.
Yasmeen Altaji@yasmeenaltaji

Hi, newsrooms: If you are relying on Columbia-affiliated journalists, namely student professionals in various programs at @columbiajourn, for exclusive, inside-campus coverage of protests and events, it is common (industry) courtesy and standard to compensate them for their work.
