As Pascal LTH points out, this has been a disgraceful few days for the European Union. But most especially it has been a disgrace for President von der Leyen and her centre-right European Peoples Party, who eagerly repeated far-right lies about what was happening in Ceuta in order to score cheap points against the EU’s last remaining government of the left. And it was also a disgrace for Denmark’s nominally centre-left prime minister Mette Frederiksen, who immediately joined in on the Spain-bashing (and co-initiated an anti-Spain letter) even as the country was attacked, despite being on paper part of the same political group as Sanchez (in reality she stopped being actually centre-left long ago). “The concern is less the far-right, who are, as in the tale of the frog and the scorpion, simply acting according to their nature, but rather the moderates who are supporting them, failing to see that they only doom themselves.” “Moderate politicians on the right make a fundamental mistake when they support such initiatives. Today it is Spain that is targeted for the far-right’s vengeance, but it will not always be so. Other countries will elect governments of the left in the future. Will the centre-right be so content with this course of anti-solidarity when it is their country that is being cut out of Schengen?” pascallth.substack.com/p/ceuta-and-eu…

Events of the past few days in Europe have been some of the most disturbing in many years - and not for the reasons given by much of the mainstream media. My latest (link below)

I really wonder whether people in the Italian government understand where Ceuta is. It is in Africa. It is de facto not part of the EU's Schengen free movement area. You need to show documents showing your legal right to be in the EU in order to board a boat or plane to leave it. That's why 96% of those who crossed have already returned to Morocco. They came to learn there's no getting out of Ceuta. The migrants have learned it, when will Italy's government?
Paolo Mossetti@paolomossetti

🇮🇹🇪🇸 Italy's Foreign Minister struggled to explain the government's suspension of Schengen with Spain. Asked whether authorities had intercepted anyone arriving from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, he admitted they hadn't. Pressed on whether such checks were likely to catch anyone, he replied that "it's important to control the borders... like with Slovenia" before suggesting people from Ceuta could simply arrive by plane or ferry.

Horror w Hiszpanii. Około 20 ofiar śmiertelnych, płonące ulice, splądrowane sklepy i domy, Hiszpanie bici i upokażani. Służby bezradne. Obywatele pozostawieni sami sobie. Tak się kończy lewacka ideologia.

Europe's centre-and-far-right leaders chose to use an attack on an EU member state as a chance for cheap political points rather than show solidarity. A stark contrast to how they reacted when migrants were used as weapons against Poland by Belarus/Russia davekeating.substack.com/p/ceuta-expose…

Two days ago Italy 🇮🇹, Austria 🇦🇹, Finland 🇫🇮 and Denmark 🇩🇰 were announcing the possible suspension of Schengen with Spain. As of today, no notification of any suspension of free movement has been filed by any of these States to the European Commission. De facto, borders with 🇪🇸 Spain remain exactly as open as they were on Monday. Good news: a lot of theatre, aimed at a political adversary (Sánchez) - and almost no practical effect for free movement with Spain. Politicians come and go. Solidarity among Europeans will outlast them all. home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schen…

60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta in 24h. Most have already returned. Yet parts of Europe attacked Spain instead of supporting a member state under extraordinary pressure. Deeply counterproductive. It encourages those who weaponize migration against the EU. @Carla_Hobbs at @ecfr 👇 ecfr.eu/article/alone-…

The flood of tens of thousands of people into Spain's Ceuta was clearly orchestrated by Morocco. The only question is whether it was retaliation for a recent rapprochement between Spain and Algeria or for Spain's criticism of Israeli atrocities. Or both. trib.al/RyfnNvp

Dear @GiorgiaMeloni, your response to Ceuta’s migration crisis is deeply faulty and shows bad faith. Here’s why: 1. Ceuta was never a threat to the Schengen area. Individuals crossing an external border don’t get automatic access to Schengen, that’s not how EU law works. Conflating a national border incident with a Schengen-wide threat is SO cheap! 2. Italy’s proposed checks on arrivals from Spain have no legal basis. Internal border checks under the Schengen Borders Code require a genuine, serious threat, and are a last resort, not a tool to pressure a neighbouring government over a domestic policy choice. 3. Instead of solidarity with Spain and the people affected, the choice was to blame Spain, a cheap way to score points at home at the expense of a fellow Member State managing a hard moment at its border. 4. That stance didn’t protect Europe. It handed ammunition to Europe’s worst enemies: the ones who want the Union to look divided, unprincipled, and for sale to whoever shouts loudest. 5. Now that the ‘crisis’ has been exposed as manufactured, unity and solidarity are suddenly the message. Convenient. But you don’t get credit for rediscovering solidarity once the political usefulness of blame has run out. This kind of politics doesn’t age well and Europeans deserves better than being treated as fouls. Shame on you.

Still wondering who benefits from the Ceuta crisis? One day after the Ceuta crisis exposed cracks in European solidarity, Donald Trump revived his claim that 🇬🇱 Greenland will be under US control before he leaves office. Every internal European crisis becomes an opportunity for others to advance their own interests, isolate Member States, and play Europeans against one another. Today it is 🇪🇸 Spain. Tomorrow it is 🇩🇰 Denmark. The lesson is the same: European territory is not for sale, and European solidarity is not optional.

La solidaridad y la empatía son opcionales. The far-right response to the Ceuta crisis has been swift and coordinated. Matteo Salvini has been in frequent contact with Santiago Abascal, the leader of Spain’s Vox party, as the crisis unfolded, according to Lega sources, we report on Euractiv euractiv.com/news/ceuta-mig…
