@decostop @gordygallacher @kmckenna63 Golf is a sport I could accept an argument for... McIlroy probably looked like he would get there a few years ago and might still. Faldo I'll give you as a contender, but still below Murray for me just on sheer difficulty of era

@decostop @gordygallacher @kmckenna63 Disagree... easier for a talented athlete to reach number 1 in decathlon/heptathlon/snooker/track cycling/rowing etc. than to reach the top 100 in tennis. This is my main point. Others all supplementary arguments.

@decostop @gordygallacher @kmckenna63 cycling and athletics are hard to judge since they're all doped up (some more legally than others), snooker true (if you consider it a sport - I do, lots don't). but my previous points about those sports (bar long-distance running, which is highly competitive) stand

@DaveRunning1 @gordygallacher @kmckenna63 Same for cycling, athletics, etc. Even snooker, and Stephen Hendry has achieved more than Andy Murray over a longer time.

@tomwilliams1974 @BBCSPOTY It just represents terrible marketing by most female sports bodies. WTA has shown it's possible to make superstars out of female athletes, and if we had a female tennis star she would win SPOTY. I can't think of another sport that has come close to doing what tennis has done.

1/2 Third year in a row that @BBCSPOTY podium was all-male, 12th year in a row with a male winner. Surely that represents a broken system helping to perpetuate gender inequality in sport. Surprised at lack of comment on this. Am I missing something?

@smorgasbord @tomwilliams1974 So you actually have the data, or are you just saying that because no-one is reporting a decline? I don't know the correct answer but I doubt anyone else debating this does either

@DaveRunning1 @tomwilliams1974 So, like a good split test, we have the opportunity to see the data. Race series that have distance equality don’t appear to be reporting declines in participation. Ergo, if there is no apparent harm in equalising the events I cannot see any rational basis to resist. #runequal

Imagine a world where XC hasn’t been invented. Now imagine sitting round a table and discussing this great concept, based on blood and guts racing over muddy, technical, challenging, off-road courses. Now imagine suggesting girls run shorter than boys. Stupid, isn’t it. #runequal
