@neeratanden @EricMGarcia He won an election as governor. He couldn't win an election to the Senate. Ask Brian Schweitzer, Phil Bredesen, and Larry Hogan. Popular govs in the "opposite" state of their party, got a lot of attention, did probably as well as they could, and got spanked running for Senate.
