What a wonderful way to celebrate Texas Independence Day—speaking to middle school students and engaging them in a simulation to show how Texas law and history affect their lives. Thanks to @theaustinbar volunteers and to @SCOTXHistSocy for developing the curriculum!

Happy 150th Birthday to the Texas Constitution, which took effect on February 15, 1876! Let’s make 2026—this sesquicentennial year, our “Texquicentennial”—one in which we Texans renew our commitment to active self-government by an informed and virtuous sovereign People. You too can go to the Texas State Library and Archives in Austin to see the one and only copy of the 1876 Constitution, along with a wonderful exhibit about its history.

Traces of Texas reader Jim Mangum kindly shared this remarkable shot of a buffalo (I know it's actually a bison) in Caprock Canyons State Park, where they roam freely. Said Jim: "He had just finished his dust bath and seemed to be contemplating the tragic history of millions of his kind." It's a sensational shot. What impresses me the most is that Jim was able to pick out the bison's eye so clearly from its dark fur background, when both are in shadow. Having taken thousands of shots of buffaloes, their eyes have a tendency to disappear when the light isn't shining directly at them. The lighting here is superb, the composition and sharpness is superb ... you really see the heft and strength of these awesome creatures. Thanks, Jim. Super duper!
