Albertan (get it?) (Marcin Leoplita generously gave me permission to use his image, when we met for coffee in 1583, the year before he passed away)

It's beyond bizarre that we are letting Tin Foil Hat brigade crazies like Rath divide Alberta and dominate the politics of this brilliant province, while giving them our personal data to boot.
Jason Kenney 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇮🇱@jkenney

Nutty separatist leader says that Alberta has to secede in order to prevent young Albertans from being conscripted to fight Russia in Ukraine. #unhinged #crazy #TinFoilHatBrigade

Mathematician R. H. Bing’s given name is actually R. H. When asked what he would like on a nameplate of his university office, he said ‘R only, H only, Bing’. Later he found his nameplate read ‘Ronly Honly Bing’.

Current AI custom prompt: You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can. Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval.

So my son interviewed my gay friend for an assignment in school where they were to interview a “member of the LGBTQ community “ . I thought it would be funny because my friend is no bs person but how the hell is he supposed to hand this in? 😂 I knew it would’ve bad but now he’s transcribing it , it’s so much worse than I thought.. We are debating whether to clean it up for the assignment or leave it and risk his grade but have a laugh. The teacher Is a virtue signaling moron. Not sure what to do now . Here is just one answer he provided 😂 “How has it impacted your life to be a part of LGBTQ community?” It hasn’t because I’m not part of any community. I’m just a gay man . They just keep adding letters and I don’t even know what some of these letters mean . You know what Q is ? It’s “queer”. That’s a slur. If someone calls me queer, we have a problem . I get that this is what they teach you nowadays and you have to use the letter mafia vocabulary but I want nothing to do with it. I just happen to be gay. My whole life is not me being gay and some flag or letters that mean things that have nothing to do with me . It’s all bullshit .

In 1994, Canada had a federal debt-to-GDP ratio around 75% and deficit-to-GDP ratio around 4.8% of GDP. The WSJ called us “an honorary member of the third world” and the Mexican peso crisis sent us into a tailspin. US debt-to-GDP just passed 100% and its deficit-to-GDP is 5.8%.

W.J. Cash's "The Mind of the South" (1941) is probably the most interesting book I read about the pre–Civil Rights South. Cash, himself a Southerner, wrote a book-length Mencken-inspired essay outlining how and why the region became what it was. A thread.

#BREAKING Alberta separatists say they are delivering 301K signatures calling for a vote on Alberta leaving Canada. These cannot be verified until a judge gives a go-ahead, as First Nations are challenging this, saying separation violates Treaty rights. #ableg #cdnpoli

The key to getting kids to love writing essays is to have them argue a lot first. At The Socratic Experience, students spend months in vigorous Socratic dialogue in order to motivate substantive writing. 95% of writing is thinking. The sentence-level craft matters, but if a student has nothing to argue and no idea how to build a logical case, teaching them paragraph structure is like teaching someone to gift-wrap an empty box. We've discussed a pair of essays on "Should we bring the wooly mammoths back from extinction," one for and one against. Some students are all in with excitement about it; others are concerned about the potential for negative consequences. After spending an hour reading and discussing the ideas in the essays, making and hearing their peer's arguments, they gradually develop their own reasoned opinions on the topic. They are then motivated and ready to begin writing their essays. The oral argument becomes the scaffold for the written one. Students transfer the skills from discussion to writing with the help of their writing teachers: making a claim, supporting it with evidence, anticipating objections, and conceding points where the other side has merit. This is why our students perform well on AP-level writing. They haven't been drilled on essay formulas. They've been trained to think rigorously in conversation, and the writing is then taught using motivated examples from classroom discussion, with students owning their own opinions as they move forward.
