Monte Cassino was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of WW2. After months of failed Allied offensives against the heavily fortified German Gustav Line, the Polish II Corps under General Władysław Anders launched its assault on 11 May 1944.
Exactly one week later, Polish soldiers captured the ruins of Monte Cassino Abbey, finally breaking the German defences and opening the road to Rome for the Allied forces.
Today, the Polish War Cemetery at Monte Cassino holds the graves of 1,072 Polish soldiers who fell in the battle.
