I’ve never shared this before.
A day or two after October 7th, early in the morning, the country was in shock.
Even before the funeral of Mapal Adam z”l, who was murdered at the Nova festival, I went to the home of her sister, Maayan.
Her mother, her brother Yarden, Maayan, and Maayan’s partner Yuval were there.
We sat in the small yard and talked.
Then Roee, Mapal’s boyfriend, arrived and sat down to tell the family for the first time what had actually happened and how Mapal had died.
I stood up to leave such an intimate moment, but the family said to me, “Stay.”
And then, for about an hour, Roee described in a trembling voice, detail by detail,
How he and Mapal hid under a car, and Hili Solomon, Mapal’s best friend, under another car nearby, all surrounded by dozens, perhaps hundreds, of terrorists.
How they stayed silent, pretending to be dead.
How the vile terrorists came and shot them “confirmation shots” at point-blank range.
How the blood flowed from their bodies, and Mapal’s life drained out of her there, as they lay pressed together.
How the monsters came back a second time and shot again, as gasoline from the car leaked and mixed with the blood.
How Roee smeared himself, and I think also Mapal, with blood so they would appear dead.
How for endless hours no one came.
I felt as though I was hearing the testimony of a Holocaust survivor, minutes after being liberated from Auschwitz.
Because that’s what it was. A small Holocaust.
No state. No army.
Jews hiding for hours from murderous beasts.
We all felt that Roee carried crushing guilt for not being able to save the love of his life, Mapal, nor her friend Hili.
Of course, Roee could not have done anything more than he did. He bore no blame whatsoever.
Mapal’s family told him that clearly and embraced him with immense love and compassion.
Since then, as I understand, Roee devoted himself to helping others however he could.
But in the early hours of this morning, two years later, Roee’s strength finally gave out,
and this man, with his wounded soul, took his own life.
Another soul murdered on that cursed day.

In the coming days, hopefully already tomorrow, we will celebrate the return of the hostages.
But we must not forget the murdered,
the fallen soldiers and their families,
nor the survivors who struggle every day with the horrors in their minds.
Nor the thousands wounded in body and spirit.
They live among us, and it is our duty to care for them.
This is a matter of national priority.
It is urgent!
The day after we form the government, an authority will be established to care for the victims and their families.
a moral, national, governmental obligation.
May the soul of Roee be bound in the bond of life, alongside the love of his life, Mapal.

Its already been shown that there was no life saving supplies on the flotilla since it was yet another publicity stunt. Also shown that it was paid for by a Hamas operative. And im sure the new yorkers detained by Israel are in much better care than the hostages and will be soon safely returned unlike the many hostages tortured and killed. But @ZohranKMamdani doesnt care about their welfare.

THIS. IS. ISRAEL. A family celebrated their son’s bar mitzvah at the Kotel (Western Wall). They could not find a legal parking spot anywhere. So, they parked illegally and left a note for the police which explained the situation. When they returned to their car they were shocked and saddened to see a parking ticket on their dashboard. But then they opened it and saw that it was completely empty with no details and no fine. And that the policeman wrote “Mazal tov” (congratulations) on the top right of the empty ticket. (-: My goodness I love my country!

Israël ne peut pas gagner cette guerre, parce qu’elle n’a pas été conçue pour être gagnée.
Non qu’il soit militairement dépassé, mais parce qu’il est pris dans une équation volontairement rendue insoluble. Le 7 octobre, en massacrant des civils et en enlevant des centaines d’otages, le Hamas a déclenché une guerre sans issue supportable. Israël n’a pas seulement été surpris. Il a été pris au piège.
Il faut bien comprendre : le Hamas ne cherche pas la victoire, il cherche la perte d’Israël. Peu leur importe que Gaza brûle, pourvu qu’Israël saigne. C’est une stratégie eschatologique : tout perdre, pourvu que l’autre tombe avec soi. Et sa stratégie repose sur l’enlisement, l’émotion, la manipulation des consciences occidentales. Sa force n’est pas militaire, elle est dramaturgique. Et ce qu’il y a de plus glaçant, c’est peut-être ceci : il a compris l’Occident mieux que bien des stratèges israéliens. Son véritable front est l’opinion publique occidentale, pas Tsahal.
En prenant des otages, il interdit la paix. En se dissimulant parmi les civils dans le territoire le plus densément peuplé du monde, il interdit la guerre. Le Hamas a inventé une géométrie du piège : Israël est enfermé dans une guerre où chaque victoire est une perte. Dans cette guerre asymétrique et post-moderne, ce n’est pas le réel qui compte : c’est l’image du réel.
Ce piège ne fonctionnerait pas sans la coopération involontaire des démocraties occidentales. En inversant la pression, non sur les preneurs d’otages, mais sur ceux qui tentent de les sauver, elles légitiment le chantage. En reconnaissant un État palestinien sans condition, elles transforment une stratégie terroriste en capital politique.
Soyons lucide : un cessez-le-feu accompagné de la libération de tous les otages est un mirage. Une projection occidentale. Le Hamas ne veut surtout pas de fin : il veut que le conflit pourrisse, que les otages pourrissent sous terre, que l’agonie dure. Les otages sont des trophées, des leviers, des projecteurs braqués sur Gaza pour maintenir la guerre. Ils ne seront pas tous rendus : c’est précisément pour cela qu’ils ont été pris.
Alors il ne reste qu’une alternative, et elle est atroce :
-Soit Israël insiste, peut-être des années, occupe Gaza jusqu’au dernier tunnel, au prix d’innombrables morts, d’une déroute diplomatique, et sans certitude de succès.
-Soit il se retire, et accepte sans le dire qu’un nouveau 7 octobre soit déjà en gestation.
Il ne s’agit plus de gagner, mais de choisir la forme de sa défaite (ou de sa demi-victoire diront les optimistes). Certains affirment, dans une logique clausewitzienne, qu’une guerre commencée doit être menée jusqu’au bout, sinon elle revient, en pire. D’autres estiment qu'une victoire incomplète vaut mieux qu’un désastre consommé.
Je le redis : le plus tragique, c’est que la stratégie du Hamas a fonctionné. Et elle fonctionne parce qu’on la laisse fonctionner. Le Hamas l’a compris : dans un monde gouverné par l’image, le terrorisme paie, à condition d’être bien mis en scène.

I have long argued that Netanyahu is an incompetent man at the helm of an extraordinarily competent public service, that every success Israel enjoys is not by coincidence in a policy realm that does not require the input of political leadership. And every failure lies in those elements of policy that do require wisdom and courage from the political class.
I’ve made this argument about Israeli fiscal responsibility, about judicial reform - I support reform, but they turned it into a civil war with their rage-bait and extremism - about healthcare, about the welfare system, about the unsustainable Haredi welfare state, you name it.
The last 22 months of politicized war decisions are one more demonstration of this basic point. The successful campaigns were the ones where the politicians only had to pull the trigger. Iran, for example. Wherever regular feedback by the political leadership was needed to decide military policy, especially and overwhelmingly in Gaza, there has been only sustained failure.
This isn’t an argument that the bureaucrats should run the state. It is the argument that the politicians are failing us with their venality and incompetence, and the country’s occasional remarkable successes shouldn’t be allowed to mask that march of folly.
The simple fact that Netanyahu still does not even bother to employ an English language spokesperson - or in any other way show any understanding that Hamas’s war is and has always been primarily an information war - is an excellent encapsulation of this tragedy.

Aner Shapira was a serving IDF soldier, & a rapper. He was on leave at the Nova festival when Hamas attacked.
Hamas threw grenades where he & others were sheltered. Aner threw *seven* grenades back out. He died, but saved many lives.
Honour his memory.
