You’re missing the point a bit.
Yes, it’s a comedy special, and obviously not every joke is meant to be taken literally. But that doesn’t mean every joke lands the same or should be beyond criticism.
The issue isn’t “taking jokes too seriously.” It’s that this particular joke leans on a real-world situation involving a political figure and a country where millions of people have actually suffered. That context matters whether it’s comedy or not.
Even in comedy, there’s a difference between satire that says something and a joke that oversimplifies or glosses over reality. People can enjoy the special and still say, “that part didn’t work.”
I’m not saying Trevor can’t joke about it. I’m saying that specific joke didn’t land for me, and there’s a reason why.
