BREAKING: As expected, MLB proposed a hard salary cap to union officials today as part of the next CBA, sources tell ESPN. The salary floor for teams beginning in 2027 would be set at $171.2 million which includes player benefits with the ceiling at $245.3 million.

Ex-Rep. Joe Schwarz (R-Mich.) has died at 88. A House member for one term, 2005-07, the first of several short-timers. Schwarz won the open seat in 2004 but lost renomination to GOP Rep. Tim Walberg. He lost to Democrat Mark Schauer in 2008, but reclaimed it in a 2010 rematch.

Winner of the Ken Paxton (R)/James Talerico (D) Texas Senate race will be only the fourth person to hold that seat going back to 1961. That was the year Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson (D) vacated it to become vice president.

With the bulk of Trump-defying state senators losing in Indiana's GOP primaries, it's easy to see the chamber taking another whack at congressional redistricting ahead of 2028. Republican-dominated state House already all in on effort to shift from 7 Rs, 2 Ds to a 9-0 shutout.

A problem for MI Dem Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow’s old pining for California tweets is that out-of-staterism is a major attack line against GOP nominee-in-waiting Mike Rogers. Dems hammered him over Florida home in narrow 2024 loss and presumably planned to again this year.

Former Idaho Gov. Dick Kempthorne (R) has died. As a freshman, minority party senator in 1993, introduced unfunded mandates bill that was largely ignored. But two years later, with Republican House and Senate majorities, became bedrock of GOP small, "devolved" government agenda.

@SeanTrende The group held up pretty well politically until a 2000-01 six month period. John Ashcroft lost reelection to a dead man. Switch by Jim Jeffords relegated Trent Lott to Senate minority leader, never to return to majority leader. In 2007, then-Sen. Larry Craig... well, you know.
