Very sad news in GAA circles this afternoon.
The legendary Michael Lyster, the longtime presenter of The Sunday Game, has passed away at the age of 71.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Meath benefitted from some favourable refereeing today, but there were a couple of huge calls that ref got wrong. Jack OConnor's twp pointer was only give as one when he was clearly outside arc and Cork defender touched ball on ground in the last scramble - should have been pen
@truefergallynch Agreed, Fergal. And if he was in the small rectangle, it should have been a penalty. I thought the incident was outside, but not 100% sure. All said, Cork were the better side on the day
Meath have been awarded ONE free inside the scoring range in the last two games - ONE, and that was for a delay of kickout by Niall McDonnell... either our forwards are so elusive and can't be caught to be fouled, or referees are slow to spot fouls on a green shirt 🤔🤔🤔
@truefergallynch If you are Meath it most definitely is the case, but not the opposition. I'd love to see the free count in both today and Cavan matches. I'd definitely imagine that accumulatively Meath was probably about 50% behind their opponents. A super win nonetheless & Jack Flynn again🟢🟡
What a win from Meath, but they had to do it the hard way again... as a side note 2-35 of Meath 3-36 from their last 2 games came from play... very hard to win a free these days
Not every young boy is on a county development squad.
Not every boy attends a school competing at A level.
Today, a combined selection of 2nd yr/u15 from Offaly schools competing at C & D level played Knockbeg College (A level) in a game.
This exposure is critical to development.

@TerenceUlster@PlayerGaelic@DeasunO The coach development is more of an issue as some do not wish to develop themselves firstly before they can develop the player. But is improving as younger generations in coaching are seeing the benefits to upskiloing to develop the player for both football and beyond.
@TerenceUlster@PlayerGaelic@DeasunO I'd agree with you, Terence. From coaching & managing in Development Squads and Senior Adult and Underage Clubs, my experience is that there is a pathway to adult football & beyond. It is and should be integrated through clubs, development squads & schools. All should work as 1
In the downtime between now and the New Year, let’s discuss some contentious issues.
1. It’s not a pathway if this player and 95% of his friends can’t access the next level.
2. For the 5% who do, there’s no guarantee that the coaching will be next level too.
Meath players on College teams for Sigerson Cup... thanks to @Score_Beo for the lists. Be sure to check out their app for all the latest scores from the Sigerson from 6th Jan (two more lists in comments)
There is no way that players can learn to manage their own decision-making in a training game if coaches are constantly shouting instructions.
Outline the game; identify observers; say nothing; play for 10 mins; report back, chat with players and go again.
@DavidSSport@MeathGAA I'd agree with these matches as massive victories for Meath this year, but my order would include
5. v Down away in NFL
4. v Cork home in Group phase AI
3. v Kerry neutral in Group Phase AI
2. v Galway in AI Q/F
1. v Dublin in Leinster S/F
Alright. Tis the season for lists, so in that spirit...
Here are my Top 5️⃣ @MeathGAA wins of 2025.
Agree/disagree? Would love to hear your views! Roll on 2026.
