@MaxNigro_Neuro Pretty cool stuff. Reminds me of this paper in the retina. Non-monotonic tuning via depo block. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28965762/. What I wonder is if this kind of tuning is overlooked w calcium imaging. e.g., it would just look like highly non-linear tuning to extreme sensory parameters

This is so beautiful! Elegant study linking cellular biophysics and behavior. What happens at the synapses of these neurons during depolarization block? How does this mechanism interact with inhibitory circuits?

[1/11] @DavidTadres and I are excited to share new research doi.org/10.1126/sciadv… where we show that olfactory sensory neurons undergo silencing due to depolarization block at ethologically relevant odor concentrations. #olfaction #chemosensation #behavior

@MaxNigro_Neuro I'd therefore speculate that in both cases no neurotransmitters are released. This hypothesis of course needs to be tested.

@MaxNigro_Neuro Since the loss of spiking due to loss of activation leads (the 2015 study) , and the loss of spiking due to depolarization block (current study) leads to the characteristic circling behavior, it seems the outcome for the animal is analogous.

making connections! @NufoTheFlyGuy talks about the outreach he and his lab did with mattheiu louis and david tadres bringing the PiVR system to high school students in chicago!! #cshlfly22

Very happy to be a part of this work. If you are doing functional connectivity experiments in Drosophila, beware of the leaky expression of optogenetic effectors that might lead to false positive signals in the neurons of which activity is recorded.
Matthieu Louis@tamsioul

[1/2] In functional connectomics, beware of potential artifacts due to effector leaks. In recent work with David Stern @TastekinIbrahim @DavidTadres, we document that false-positives can arise from the leaky expression of Chrimson: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@openneurosci @DavidTadres @worldwideneuro @Raspberry_Pi [3/4] PiVR is highly versatile - it can be used for much more than the creation of virtual odor gradients. For instance, in 30 min PiVR can be adapted to convert the movement of a facsimile animal into a sound landscape by using a piezo (see video, crank up the volume).

@openneurosci @DavidTadres @worldwideneuro [2/4] We will describe how PiVR works, why its high frame rate and short latency are important to create virtual realities, how to get started with it, and what is coming next with the availability of ever more powerful @Raspberry_Pi.
