@AdrianoAguzzi @silvirouskin It’s a glam grant for new PIs in the us. You write a non-deliverable, pie-in-the-sky proposal and then pray that you randomly get a better score than a bunch of others. I suppose a good CV helps slightly.

Whoever reviewer wrote this , I have to say it’s my FAVORITE REJECTION YET! “Dr Rouskin got her PhD from UCSF and then became a Fellow at the Whitehead Institute. She has an outstanding publication record, with papers in Nature Methods, Nature, Nature Communications and Science as last author, and numerous publications as contributing or first/co-first author. However, there is no evidence of independent funding yet. Candidate also has limited experience in cancer biology.” Well thank you for the kind words… unfortunately I need the funding to get the experience….

@silvirouskin Since Covid, things have been different re: trainee motivation. Not sure whether it’s due to a generational change or stasis-driven malaise. But it has become more challenging to excite trainees and motivate them to do impactful research! Exception: students from china.

Yes ! They are super depressed because they have no obvious future… barely anyone hiring PhDs right now , academia or industry …

@kenneylj We’re a med school not an undergrad campus. And tenure is overrated in biomedical research. I, personally, love it here, but thanks for your perspective.
