And let us not forget that at one stage Starmer was implicitly blaming the vetting process for letting Mandelson through — ‘both due diligence and security vetting need to be looked at again,’ he said. Turns out the vetting process did its job. And was overruled.
Andrew Neil@afneil

Amid the welter of details that will now engulf this story let’s keep in mind one thing: How is that that somebody who failed security vetting could still be appointed our ambassador to the USA? It defies belief and logic.

THIS IS JUDGE MAGGIE SCOTT She let child rapist Daniel Cieslak, who r*ped a 12-YEAR-OLD girl, WALK FREE from her courtroom. But guess what folks? Not only that! She gave him an ABSOLUTE DISCHARGE, despite him pleading GUILTY. She also sparked outrage by praising Algerian rapist Hamadache Hamza for settling in Britain and setting up a hairdressing business. She said that the predator deserved “credit” for overcoming his “very difficult background” to become a successful business owner in Scotland.

We now have the Government response: Neither the PM nor 10 Downing Street nor the Cabinet Office knew the Foreign Office had decided to ignore the fact Mandelson had failed his security vetting. Call it the ‘know-nothing’ government. But it leaves a major question unanswered: why would the FO take it on itself to make such a huge judgement call — and not inform/consult Downing Street? What was in it for the FO? It hadn’t even necessarily wanted Mandy, unlike Starmer and the 10 Downing Street operation. Doesn’t add up.
Andrew Neil@afneil

BREAKING NEWS (with the potential to be massive): The Guardian reveals Peter Mandelson failed advanced security vetting before becoming US ambassador. He was initially denied developed vetting clearance in January 2025 - weeks after Keir Starmer had officially announced his appointment. Foreign Office was ‘encouraged’ to deploy a rarely-used power to override the recommendation from security officials. The Government promised total transparency on the Mandelson affair after MPs forced it to release of a batch of documents about the process. But nothing it has released reveals this startling fact. Indeed, Starmer has always insisted Mandelson was subject to 'security vetting, carried out independently by the security services, which is an intensive exercise that gave him clearance for the role'. I’m going to file this because no way will there be 400,000 new ‘clean energy jobs’ between now and 2030 — unless the definition is so wide as to be meaningless. So let’s set the base. How many ‘clean energy jobs’ are there now, early 2026, what’s the definition and the breakdown? Then we can monitor progress, or the lack thereof.
Ed Miliband@Ed_Miliband

Five new clean energy Technical Excellence Colleges will help train thousands of young people for the industries of the future. With 400,000 clean energy jobs set to be created by 2030, we’re investing in the skills needed for the next generation of jobs in our communities.

I’m genuinely struggling to understand this. Ye is banned from the UK for saying offensive things. Meanwhile, a former ISIS terrorist, Ahmed al-Sharaa was shaking hands with Keir Starmer and King Charles III last week. One said mean things. The other chopped heads off. This does not make sense.

The nut zero zealotry of Ed Miliband. A new occasional series. [feel free to add]. Fertiliser prices and shortages are soaring because the petrochemical industries of the Gulf states are major global suppliers but the Strait of Hormuz, through which they export, is closed. Not good for the spring planting season. Undaunted the UK will introduce a levy on imported carbon-intensive fertiliser as part of its costly obsession with cutting emissions, even when the impact is slight. At a time when we should be increasing food security government policy is to penalise farmers further.

Every measure you list involves spending wealth. You don’t list one measure that creates wealth. And if you don’t create wealth you will soon run out of it to spend, which is already happening (hence all your extra taxes and borrowing).

Former Labour anti-corruption minister Tulip Siddiq was sentenced to 6 years in prison in Bangladesh for corruption. A formal red notice request to Interpol has been made after she failed to respond to a Bangladesh arrest warrant. How will 'international law' Starmer respond?

🚨 The odds of this happening randomly are around 1 in 374 trillion. There are around 67 million people in the UK. Just 4 are in command of our nuclear submarines. Labour MP Joani Reid, whose husband has been arrested on suspicion of spying for China, has been linked to 2 of them. The chance of that happening once is about 1 in 16.75 million. Twice? 1 in 374 trillion. What an incredible coincidence…

NHS care is now being rationed. GPs have been told (and will be paid) to refuse, at least, 1 out of 4 specialist referrals to hospitals in order to reduce waiting lists by 25% minimum. Wes Streeting is a dangerous menace. This is an inhumane way to reduce waiting lists.

This is an astonishing fact from today’s Sunday Times. At least 224 out of 257 new Labour MPs elected in July 2024 came from either charities or communications/lobbying agencies, or were formerly “political employees”. It explains so much about Labour backbenchers’ priorities.
