@henrywinter be good to see crackdown on another aspect damaging live game: systematic time wasting. Eg Watching Arsenal live is excruciating with players walking at snail’s pace to corners.suggest refs book teams for time wasting (not just players) and sin bin a player for two team offences

Footballing authorities emphasise VAR is here to stay and Uefa will hold a meeting with the Premier League and other major European leagues to get better alignment on VAR. The governing body of European football is understood to seek less of the microscopic intervention that has caused such controversy in the Premier League and Serie A. VAR seems to work better in the Champions League because: teams more focused on playing football (rather than grappling at corners); standard of officiating is inevitably higher as Uefa draws upon elite referees from a range of countries; and Uefa’s lighter-touch stance on technology. Mindful of fans’ frustrations with delays, Uefa would use VAR on corners only if it was immediately identifiable before the restart. Uefa’s use of the Hawkeye semi-automated offside (SAO) system working well. A more advanced, quicker "fuller" version of the Hawkeye SAO is currently being trialled for use by Fifa at the World Cup. Again, mindful of the need to prevent needless delays, the assistant will be notified almost instantly of a clear offside and can flag immediately rather than letting play run on as often happens now and potentially risking collisions and injuries. Uefa is expected to follow the Premier League in trialling a direct-to-consumer streaming service for Champions League matches. Premier League Plus is being launched in Singapore next season which will allow subscribers to watch all 380 games. The presence of five Premier League teams in next season’s Champions League looks all but guaranteed with extra spot via Uefa co-efficients. There has been discussion amongst clubs on the Continent about whether “country protection” rules should be dispensed with earlier – in the league phase – so English clubs could meet and potentially knock each other out. Uefa’s Club Competitions Committee decided against this at a meeting earlier this season.

@FabrizioRomano @BeanymanSports Hurzeler is raising a serious point. Arsenal with their time wasting, set-piece rugby and play acting have led a joyless march to the title. Pointing out it has been effective is fine but does not make it worth watching

@SpursOfficial Prices are way above market value and should be cut probably by as much as a third - need to bench make against other mid table clubs - plus measures to make sharing tickets easier (not harder) and support sitting together

Mixed news for Arsenal fans... 1. Great news that Bukayo Saka signing new five-year deal. Exceptional player, not quite at his best this season (7g, 5a), occasional injury, but elite when fit and in form. Dribbling threat, going in and outside, impressive central. Increased dead-ball expertise, only 24, plus he’s an England starter. Always wise for a club to sort a star’s future going into a tournament. 2. And... such substantial investment in the squad, reflected also in recruits last summer (almost £250m inc Zubimendi, Madueke, Gyokeres, Eze etc has to be funded). PSR. So some bad news: New £168 category A+ ticket was “strongly opposed” by Arsenal Supporters' Trust. After discussions, it's only applicable to two games a season - “specifically a potential Champions League quarter-final and semi-final”. AST adds, “This ticket category will see general admission ticket prices range from £90 to £168, making it by far the most expensive general admission price in English football. It puts Arsenal top of a table we don’t want to win and questions how serious the club is about its commitment to being together on a journey with supporters.” Interestingly, AST statement adds, “This pricing level follows the American/FIFA model of squeezing more and more from fans. It is perhaps significant that this change has come when Arsenal’s Boardroom has become more US-centric following three appointments (from Kroenke Sports & Entertainment) in September 2025. “We will continue to make the case for ticket price restraint and fairness to both the new Board and Arsenal’s Executive in future meetings as we believe it is vital that the club is aware of the impact pricing has on its loyal supporter base.” 3. More bad news: Club announces 3.9% increase in General Admission season tickets and Club Level. Arsenal have strengthened squad, are doing well, have a huge fanbase so board feels it can raise prices. Additional revenue generated from ticket hikes doesn’t fully compare with the huge broadcast income from PL and UCL. One reason why TV pays so much is for the atmosphere that fans generate. Pricing some fans out and frustrating others with more hikes seems counter-productive. “We firmly believe that with the football sector benefitting from ever-increasing broadcast and commercial revenues it is time to stop squeezing match-going supporters so hard,” adds AST. “We now expect both Arsenal and the Premier League to give more explanation as to why they have chosen to ignore the compelling case for a price freeze put forward by the ‘Protect the Fans, Protect the Game’ campaign.” Campaign organised league-wide by Football Supporters’ Association. Demand for Arsenal tickets so strong that touting is a huge problem that the club is fighting hard. Arsenal point out they have identified, investigated and “banned over 17,500 memberships this season alone” for "suspicious" activity and blocked “many IP addresses linked to suspected bot activity”. 4. Good news that concessions protected, 1,000 free tickets for local fans (across the season) and no fee for using ticket transfer service on the ticket exchange. 5. Good news that Arsenal installing safe standing in parts of the Clock End Lower from next season and North Bank Lower from 27/28; 13,500 fans, including away, will have rail seats. (nb, as this question is getting asked, doesn’t increase capacity). Follows 10-year campaign by AST to introduce safe standing. Trust gives “credit to (ceo) Rich Garlick and his executive team who have recognised the importance of the issue to fans”. #AFC

@henrywinter Spurs whole pricing policy needs fo be reviewed right across the board for next season - bench marking against similar mid table clubs eg palace, wolves

“Tottenham Hotspur have bigger problems than their Senior Concessions policy right now, but Club CEO Vinai Venkatesham’s open letter before the West Ham game means we need to respond.” Important editorial which will strike a chord with fans at other clubs thefightingcock.co.uk/2026/01/save-o…

@henrywinter There seems to have been change in way corners/ set peices are reffed so teams over rely on them for goals. That makes prem football more boring. I would disincentivise this with more protection for keepers and incentivise the other with extra point for three goals from open play

High stakes, low blocks. How to improve low-scoring Premier League. Tackling time-wasting, VAR goal police being more judicious in interventions and what about Thierry Henry's 2023 proposal on CBS about an additional point for three goals? Column open.substack.com/pub/henrywinte…

@henrywinter A reasonable statement of principles but not sure the disconnect is properly understood - a bold step would be to reduce ticket prices next season

“We know there is a distance between the Club and our supporters and we are committed to rebuilding that connection.” In my experience, Vinai Venkatesham is one of the most genuine execs in football. Let’s hope this message signals a positive reset in board-fans’ relations #THFC

@ChangeForSpurs Ticket prices are clearly above market value. They need to come down, not just be held. The stadium is full of grey men. They need to make it easier for parents to sit with their children and for supporters to give tickets to friends

It has indeed been a busy start to 2026 for @Ldn_Ambulance but would be remiss not to note that we just delivered the fastest December response times since 2020 (best Cat 2 since 2019) - NHS building back
