castanet.net/news/Kelowna/5… We have the largest % delta of any city in Canada for home prices relative to incomes, according to this private sector analysis. What has council attempted to fix this? Nearly nothing. Both on the income and the expense side.

@markericthered Depending on the jurisdiction, stronger eviction rules (unintentional banning) or outright banning tenement housing (overt banning).

Of my own friend group, I know someone who has graduated with a doctorate of some kind of organic chemistry, and a housing PhD, who are both emigrating to the US. The quality of life we enjoy in many respects hasn’t outweighed the lack of opportunity, economic & otherwise.

Everything from investment competitiveness, tax and regulatory competitiveness, and the efficacy of our public services matters. Not only for our own benefit in the present, but for the long-term benefit of our society.

When our best and brightest (including some of my own friends) are constantly drawn to higher returns and greener pastures elsewhere, we need to look in the mirror and figure out why Canada isn’t attractive for them to stay. Brain drain leads to long-term decline.

Canada is becoming less of a meritocracy over time, which is causing some major problems. It shouldn't be the case that who your parents are is the biggest determinant of whether you'll be successful, but it's becoming increasingly true. We discuss that today on DemograFix. 1/3

The narrow Amsterdam canal house was not an aesthetic choice Property was taxed by street frontage width So merchants built tall, deep, and narrow, and hoisted goods through the top floor because nothing fit through the front door Every tourist photo of Amsterdam is a monument to tax avoidance

Had a bit of a scare this evening. My Amazon account got hacked, somehow despite 2 factor authentication. Thankfully it was only leaving bogus reviews before I shut it down. Never a bad idea to take cybersecurity more seriously. I’ll be having a look at everything tomorrow.

@TheChaosWeeber Yes, and I in particular dislike the framing some are using by justifying a lower credit rating as “putting people first”.

The problem with democracy is how voters vote for fiscal bankruptcy and it's impossible to reverse because voters punish those who try to fix the problems voters voted for

What a beautiful spring day it is. So warm. Renovations to city park are coming along nicely too.
