@Robbie_Reasons You didn't pay into a pot, instead when Wedgwood Benn suggested a sovereign wealth fund from North Sea Oil (which could have been your state pension pot) you voted for tax cuts under Milk Snatcher, don't come to us for our taxes to pay for you now

Exactly. Pensions are not a pot to be raided when incompetent governments can't balance their books.

@PhilMyers53 Don't give him the accolade of the 'great man (or sh!te man) of history'. There was Alex Johnson, Milk Snatcher's deindustrialisation, ConDem Austerity, Northcliffe and Rotherhithe press, etc all in the mix. That mountebank only had the compere rôle at best

@stephen365 @fesshole I'd say society does owe people a living - it's the social contract, we've a right to work and in return get disposable income that recirculated in the economy through our spending & public good (like health care, defence, streetlights, rubbish collection, etc) through our taxes

I'm an unemployed graduate, have applied for hundreds of jobs and no luck. I've removed myself from the organ donor registry. If society isn't going to help me, I'm not going to help society. I will rejoin once I have a job.

75 years ago today, 🇧🇪 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🇩🇪 🇳🇱 🇱🇺 signed the Paris Treaty, with the aim of pooling their coal and steel production. It was the first step towards lasting peace and economic cooperation in post-war Europe, and a key milestone in #EUhistory. More info➡️link.europa.eu/Dwrfq6

@portraitinflesh Perhaps I read Lion & Unicorn at too an impressionable age. But I like idea (perhaps 20:1 or more) but exec pay rewards failure, grifters come in for short time then get non-exec role elsewhere. Plenty of experienced staff could be promoted to these roles at reasonable pay level

To understand the UK's governance problem - why we can't have nice things, why the state seems unable to deliver - we must grasp this constitutional paradox: a PM with a solid parliamentary majority rules over a void, and they have so much theoretical power that they cannot act.

@WulfrunianChris Also excessive CEO pay rewards failure more than success - they can come in mess up a place and retire comfortably after a short time. Tying them to staff wages through a pay ratio helps restrain this as well

@WulfrunianChris George Orwell suggested 10:1 it in The Lion & Unicorn. Ratios sound a good idea - arrangements can be made to cover apprenttices or stop outsourcing as a get around. Though maybe 20:1 or higher gives more leeway. On the other hand perhaps we want CEOs who are dedicated not greedy

Pay ratios are a fine policy conceptually but you need to set a sensible ratio. 10:1 will see companies hire their CEOs as consultants, and strip their bottom 10% of paid staff into insecure, no benefits agency contracts. It also blows up the current apprenticeship system.
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 NEW: Green leader Zack Polanski will call for policies to end the "affordability crisis" tomorrow - The introduction of a 10:1 pay ratio, whereby the highest-paid employee earns no more than ten times the lowest-paid - Free school meals for all primary and secondary pupils - Universal energy bill support for households and stronger rent controls - A customs union with the EU to cut business costs

@DarrenJohnson66 We've moved on from the generational dislike of each other's music, its not like when oarents would tut at TOTP. Boomers and Gen X have grown up with rock music and don't want to move on and our kids like the same stuff.

Admittedly I go to folk and heavy metal festivals rather than anything really trendy but the festivals I go to are rammed with middle-aged people and pensioners. What's the big deal about older people going to festivals? theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Distance us further from the EU - suicide Leave things as they are - meh Get closer to the EU but without a say - feels rather self defeating Rejoin the EU and become a full participant in every decision - only sensible way forward
