@Xzabraxis Why is this public knowledge 🤨 It doesn't seem like an unreasonable thing to do but...

@FFmpeg Is it regressions? Imagine you go all out to tweak your intrinsics laden C code to output the right asm only for it to get munted on the next point release.

Slowly making every X user realise why we use hand-written assembly and not intrinsics
cloud@cloud11665

@FFmpeg @joelcompiles @odudex @TencentGlobal Yeah, then it’s probably less trouble to just write direct asm rather than going through all compilers and seeing what they lower down to on godbolt 😂

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak Btw, these things are like $75 USD and quite robust and widely used. A Rockwell factorytalk hmi is like $3000 and does the same thing with a ropey ass IDE like Visual Basic 5. Ignition is way more capable runs on PCs and Raspberry Pis and is also not cheap

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak I've got one here ah. Siemens clone plc and mediocre HMI stack in one unit with ethernet and USB. Wouldn't recommend this one and it's very regrettable building my cabinet out of MDF, definitely don't recommend that. But yeah, integrated works in principle for small machines

Rockwell tries to sell you what are basically PIC16s with some 24V IO. We need a total retooling of industrial electronics in the US if we want to win. Look at Automation Direct’s Click PLCs, Arduino compatible PLCs as well. NO MORE LADDER LOGIC

PLCs, am I right? Clap

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak Twist and mold is why you don't build these out of mdf btw. It's outdoors but out of the weather and.. yeanah

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak It's just a component in a bigger system. There's a lot you could do to make that bigger system more ergonomic and flexible (it's my job). You want the controller to be an interchangeable replacement part. It fails, install a new one. No fuss.

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak I'm all for doing away with Rockwell but that doesn't change that the switchgear is not in the same place as the operators. There's no point in the controller having a UI because it's not where the people are. It makes about as much sense as a relay or a fuse having a UI.

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak Nope. That's all done at another level. PLCs are cool, they dump their entire internal state over Ethernet. The only indication you need on a PLC box is "running" and "good". Everything else is monitored remotely by tags or programming tools (Logix for Rockwell)

@ATaylorFPGA @i2cjak If it's not red, it doesn't have a safety certificate. Reliability is best effort. Even if it's red safety only assures that it fails in a predictable direction, not that it's actually reliable.

@jcm10x1 @i2cjak Why the fuck would it need a touchscreen? These are no touch devices, everything is remote.

@i2cjak How would you feel about one that was modern, had a touch screen, best in class software and can be programmed with just a gui, that was more capable than these basic options for a few grand?

@i2cjak I love ladder logic. But yeah, there's a lot of fucky with Rockwell. We use it at our plant and basically everything is made out of pure grift.

I am finishing my contract April 30 and relocating to Tauranga. Looking for a new role: SCADA, PLC, mechanical design, electronics, firmware, Linux considered.
