From delay to delivery. 🏗️🔥 A year ago, I vowed that a new contractor would be appointed for the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance in Hankey, Eastern Cape, and that the project would be put back on the path to completion after more than 10 years of delays. 🤝 This morning, I made good on that promise by handing over the site to the newly appointed contractor. Once completed, the Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance will honor her memory with the dignity and respect she deserves, while creating jobs and opportunities for the local community. This is how we build a better South Africa. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

The DA in KZN was well represented by our delegation from across the province and structures at today’s Federal Council which is the highest decision making body between congresses. Thank you to our team for the well informed inputs and positions they articulated on behalf of the public representatives and activists we represent in the province.

Ahead of Mandela Day tomorrow, I joined @UmngeniLocal @MayorPappas to spend our 67 minutes at Sikhulile Crèche in Nottingham Road, KwaZulu-Natal, repainting the centre and jungle gym, repairing fencing, and donating cooking equipment, educational materials and toys. These practical improvements will create a safer, brighter learning environment for the children when they return from the school holidays. I cannot wait to see their reactions when they see their improved centre. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

This morning, alongside @UmngeniLocal @MayorPappas, I visited Howick Police Station to see the improvements completed by the Department of Public Works & Infrastructure. The holding cells have been restored back to operational use after being closed since 2019. The work included cleaning and repainted, while damaged roofs, lights, water pipes and flush systems have been repaired. This means the police can focus on fighting crime instead of driving detainees to Pietermaritzburg which is an hour away. This is a clear example of what can be done by the Department and what can be achieved when we deliver quality work that helps client departments better serve communities like uMngeni. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

Today, I’m partnering with the @UmngeniLocal and @MayorPappas to lend a helping hand to a local ECD centre as well as donate cooking items and toys for the children they look after. I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they come back from school holidays 🥳

🎥 Honouring the fallen by preserving their memory. 🇿🇦 On Sunday, I joined President Cyril Ramaphosa at Delville Wood in France to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of the South Africans who fought there 110 years ago. The Department of Public Works & Infrastructure is proud to have restored this historic memorial ahead of the commemoration, ensuring that it continues to honour all South Africans who served and sacrificed during the First World War. Their stories form part of our shared national history. We will continue protecting this sacred site so that future generations can learn from, reflect on and remember those who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom and liberty. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

🎥 Partnership is how we will prevent future building collapses. 🤝🏽 Yesterday, I visited the Nazareth Baptist Church, under the leadership of Unyazi Lwezulu, in eBuhleni Village with departmental officials following the collapse of a wall at the church complex. I thanked the Shembe Church leadership for its willingness to work with the Department and the Council for the Built Environment to strengthen building practices and improve safety. We are grateful that no lives were lost in the tragedy, thanks in part to the prompt response of emergency services. This is exactly what the Integrated Social Facilitation Framework is designed to achieve: bringing government, communities and institutions together early to identify risks, resolve challenges and find practical solutions that protect lives. Together, we can build safer communities. #LetsBuildSA💙 🇿🇦

This afternoon, after visiting the site of the wall collapse at the Nazareth Baptist Church in Inanda, I visited one of the youngest victims - a 13-year-old boy - in hospital and met with his family. I extended my sympathies to him and his family and wished him a full and speedy recovery, as I do to all those injured in the collapse. We are grateful that no lives were lost, and we are committed to working with the church and all other stakeholders to prevent similar incidents in the future and protect lives. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

This morning, I visited the Nazareth Baptist Church, under the leadership of Unyazi Lwezulu, in eBuhleni Village, Inanda following Monday’s wall collapse which injured 12 people, four of whom remain in hospital and one of which was a 13 year old child. After meeting with church elders, I extended my sympathies to those injured and thanked the Shembe Church leadership for welcoming me to the church. I have committed to working with the church, through the Council for the Built Environment, to investigate the circumstances of the collapse, strengthen building practices, and help prevent similar incidents in the future. Together, we must ensure that every building is safe and that the lives of South Africans are protected. #LetsBuildSA 💙🇿🇦

Today, I joined the President and the South African National Defence Force in commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Delville Wood. Those brave young men entered a wooded area in France and were ordered to hold it at all costs. Between 15 and 20 July 1916, of the 3,153 who entered, only 720 emerged when they were finally relieved. Shells fell around them at a rate of 400 a minute, and still they held. When their ammunition was exhausted, they resorted to hand-to-hand combat, and still they did not surrender. Every tree, except one, was destroyed during the battle. That tree still stands today, alongside shell craters and the trenches that remain etched into the ground. The Department of Public Works & Infrastructure has played a significant role in restoring this important memorial over the past two years, while also incorporating the memory of those lost in the SS Mendi and those who fought with the Cape Corps into the museum to honour all South Africans who fell in Europe. We will continue to work to preserve the memory of those who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom and liberty.

This is what our staff and contractors go through while trying to deliver better basic services. We will not be intimidated. We will be back there with Metro Police and the project will continue.

'Gunmen halt Cape Town sewer repairs as terrified workers flee'. Sad reality. Three years ago Wendy Kloppers was murdered by construction mafia which caused a long delay in completion of the Delft Symphony Way Housing Project. news24.com/southafrica/cr…
