The initiative comes in response to the growing number of traffic accidents. Currently, the City of Decatur has recorded 865 traffic accidents year-to-date, in addition to 239 private property accidents, which equates to 61 accidents a week.

Chief Torry Mack is launching a new traffic safety initiative to target speeding and dangerous moving violations across the city. “Operation Slow and Steady,” will officially begin on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Citizens with cats/dogs may seek shelter at City Hall as long as animals are kept on a leash or in a crate. Firearms, alcohol and tobacco are not allowed in the shelter.

A Tornado Watch has been issued for Morgan County until 11 p.m. Decatur City Hall is available as a storm shelter at this time.

The Decatur Police Department is proud to announce the re-activation of its Bicycle Unit, a proactive initiative designed to enhance public safety and improve operational effectiveness during special events. Eight officers will man the unit equipped with Recon Interceptor E-Bikes
