If you take hip hop/rap music seriously, and If you appreciate the work that I do, help me continue… And help me to expand my network to include more contributors and writers. I created a GoFundMe to help pay for the print costs for my book ‘The Art of Sampling Tradition of Hip Hop/Rap Music and Copyright Law, 3rd Edition.’ This is the 2nd step in expanding the BeatTips Network, my network of hip hop publications that take an in-depth, hard hitting, and no nonsense approach to hip hop writing. All book sales go directly to paid opportunities for writers and contributors. So please donate to my GoFundMe. $5, $10, $25, whatever you can do; it will go a long way. More importantly, it will let me know who’s locked in with me… -Said gofund.me/36ed08714

“as the world's most dominant music culture — a music culture that has undoubtedly helped (and continues to help) advance society — hip hop/rap music personifies the purpose of copyright law. In fact, hip hop/rap music's very existence is an example of the sort of thing that copyright law seeks to promote.” (from ‘The Art of Sampling: The Sampling Tradition of Hip Hop/Rap Music and Copyright Law, 3rd Edition’)

Dionne Warwick, upset with misogyny in rap lyrics, once set up a meeting with Snoop Dogg and Suge Knight at her home, where she demanded that they call her a “bitch” to her face. Snoop Dogg later said, “I believe we got out-gangstered that day.” Effortlessly cool photos: bit.ly/4cFoZT1

Thirty years ago today, The Prodigy released "Firestarter"—one of the defining British records of the 1990s. The track began as an instrumental, built by Liam Howlett around a distorted keyboard riff that was partly inspired by the Foo Fighters' "Weenie Beenie," with samples pulled from the Breeders, Art of Noise, and Ten City. Then, Keith Flint changed everything. Up until that point, Flint had been a dancer in the group, dismissed by much of the rock press as having no real musical contribution. When he heard the instrumental, he approached Howlett and asked to record vocals. He had never done it before. The result became one of the most iconic singles of the decade. Shot on a £20,000 budget in an abandoned London tube station, the video introduced the world to a transformed Flint on a Thursday evening BBC broadcast. The BBC promptly banned it after the premiere. The song debuted at No. 1 anyway and spent three weeks at the top of the UK charts. The controversy only accelerated its momentum. "Firestarter" set the stage for The Prodigy’s 1997 album, ‘The Fat of the Land.' It became the first electronic album to top the US Billboard chart. Rest in Peace Keith Flint.
