Demographer Ilmārs Mežs explains why Latvians have historically been keen to adopt German surnames (or, in some regions, Polish ones), as well as why they have generally been less prone than their Estonian neighbours to revert back to "native" forms Link below: "From Kalniņš to Bergs (and Back): Latvian Surnames Over Time" bit.ly/4vIiiJj

Funny thing about your hometown: you don’t notice its beauty until you leave. The more I revisit Šiauliai, the more interwar modernist gems I discover that I walked past for years without thinking. This might be second city afte Kaunas in amount of Lithuanian interwar Period modernism architecture.

Modest height, still impressive. View from the highest peak of the Baltics, Suur Munamägi in Estonia, at 318 meters. 🇪🇪 Special greetings to our Baltic friends in Latvia and Lithuania 😉

Fascinating presentation on Estonian jingles at Riga conference yesterday. Apparently the USSR's indifference to copyright meant only two months separated this being released in Germany and it being made the theme tune for a political show on Estonian TV m.youtube.com/watch?v=PHiN26…

Since the early 1990s, Latvia has undergone a successful transformation, becoming a democratic, free-market state and joining both the EU and NATO. Today, it ranks among highly developed countries. However, despite these achievements, it requires decisive reforms to overcome its current political and economic stagnation. The logic of Latvian polarisation, which has kept pro-Russian parties away from central power over the past 15 years, has led to the emergence of a system of technocratic coalition governments lacking a clear vision for development. This political cordon sanitaire has protected the state from Russian influence, but it has also constrained further modernisation. Without comprehensive reform, Latvia risks prolonged socio-economic stagnation. Structural reforms of the administrative apparatus that go beyond slogans about ‘cutting red tape’, are crucial for increasing its effectiveness. Their aim should be to accelerate decision-making and implementation, although this cannot be pursued in isolation from the quality of legislation adopted by the legislature. In the longer term, such reforms would enhance the efficiency of the state and also help to overcome the crisis of public trust. More 👉 osw.waw.pl/en/publikacje/…

Latvia wants to ban Belarusians from owning firearms The Latvian Seimas supported amendments in the first reading that could ban citizens of Belarus and Russia from owning firearms. They plan not only not to issue new permits, but also to cancel existing ones. 70 deputies voted for the project, only four were against. The initiative was proposed by the National Unity party, which explains this by the need to strengthen the country's security. These are not the only new restrictions. The day before, changes had already come into force in Latvia that allow the cancellation of residence permits for foreigners if they have repeatedly violated the law or supported countries that are considered a threat to democratic states.

Chornobyl fallout map. What I remember from being kid in Estonia post disaster: No mushroom picking for several years. No icicle licking for several years (bc possible fallout on rooftops). Seeing ill liquidators in hospital waiting rooms. Many Estonians were sent there.

📍 Druskininkai, Lithuania 🇱🇹 The M. K. Čiurlionis House Museum, was the first and only residence owned by Adelė and Konstantinas Čiurlionis, purchased around 1896. At the time, M. K. Čiurlionis was already in his twenties and studying at the Warsaw Institute of Music, yet he regularly returned for extended summer stays, as well as during winter and Easter holidays. Though an erudite and cosmopolitan figure, Čiurlionis remained a village child at heart deeply attached to his family and to the natural surroundings of Druskininkai. These long returns home played a decisive role in shaping his artistic vision. His supportive parents even arranged for him to have the best studio of his life, a modest room with a window, where many of his most renowned paintings and musical compositions were created or begun. Family members were often present in this creative process, serving as observers, critics, and at times, as subjects of his work. Text source: ciurlionis.lt

In the twin towns of Valga and Valka, an invisible line still divides two communities - even after the border between Estonia and Latvia disappeared. A new EU-funded project is inviting young people to fix that. #SmartRegions in partnership with @EUinmyRegion

"Russia risks nothing". Just: - Article 5. - Actual WW3. - Drawing Belarus into a war. - Losing access to the Baltic Sea. - Blockades on Kaliningrad. - Further death and destruction for its military. This is clickbait at this stage.
Roman Sheremeta 🇺🇸🇺🇦@rshereme

An attack on the Baltic states is entirely plausible, and here’s why. There are at least three reasons. First and foremost: russia risks nothing. No matter how events unfold with the occupation of the Baltic countries, things will not get worse for russia. Sanctions are already in place. Europe no longer buys its oil or gas. Weapons are being supplied to Ukraine. From a purely military perspective, russia also risks nothing. It has nuclear weapons, so if it wins and occupies the Baltics, or even parts of them, no one will be able to push it out. And if it loses, it will not lose its own territory. It will simply retreat to its borders, and NATO will not invade russian territory because of those same nuclear weapons. So why not try? Second reason: the goals of the war. The objectives of russia go far beyond the occupation of the Baltics. Above all, russia is interested in weakening or dismantling NATO and the EU. From this perspective, any territorial gain in the Baltics would count as a victory. Even if russia does not capture Vilnius or Tallinn, but only a few border villages, that would still be a win, because it would demonstrate NATO’s inability to defend its members. So again, why not try? Third reason: russia has sufficient forces and resources in the potential conflict zone to carry out military objectives and achieve an acceptable outcome. In the Leningrad Military District, there is a combat-ready army of around 70,000 troops, which can easily be reinforced with reserves from the Ukrainian front. This army is mechanized, with around 700 tanks and a large amount of armored equipment. Separately, I would highlight the drone component, which has no real equivalent in NATO and could significantly shift the balance of power in the event of an invasion. If the forces are sufficient, then why not try? Thus, as of now, we are facing the following situation: russia has enough forces and resources to achieve its goals in the Baltics, and it does not face a bad scenario under any development of events. The situation is very similar to the one before the invasion of Ukraine, especially considering the law that allows putin to “protect russians abroad,” which was quickly introduced in the State Duma. The Baltic states have helped us more than anyone else, so I sincerely hope our friends will not face war. But to preserve peace, one must prepare for a major war. It is very good that our Baltic friends have learned from Ukraine’s mistakes and have built defensive lines and fortifications to repel an invasion. I very much hope that russia will break its teeth on the Baltics, just as it did on Ukraine. Source: translated and adopted from Serhii Marchenko

In Estonia, a pig squealing imitation contest was held In Tartu, people competed to see who could best imitate a pig. Judges evaluated not only how realistic the sound was, but also performance, volume, and артистизм. The winner received a fitting prize — half a pig carcass and a bundle of sausages.

Have fruitlessly sent multiple requests to the help centre; tried to DM Premium (doesn't even send) - and then consulted Grok, which apologised profusely and said it would "immediately escalate". Questioned as to what this would involve, it confirmed it does not have this ability
