At Terrificon 2023, he said to me “You should be working.” As a near lifelong fan of him and his works. Those words really had an impact with me. And they’ve motivated me, every day since. Hey sir! @ThatKevinSmith When I was 11, I had just one friend. His parents were friends with a guy whose video store closed. And this guy invited his parents to bring us by take whatever movies we wanted. So as to find good homes for his tapes. Amidst the small stack of movies I had chosen. Was a tape, shrouded in box art that suggested the tone of a comic book. Emblazoned across the front of the box, in a sharp green title read “Mallrats”. And with that fateful discovery, my life was forever changed. My name is Sylar. I am a comic book artist from Boston. More specifically, I am a penciler. I am an avid comic reader. A Wednesday warrior. And yet at the age of 35, I’ve found that there haven’t ever been characters I could truly see myself in. (Aside from Howard the Duck.) But in the movie “Mallrats”, I saw myself in Brodie Bruce. Surrounded by comic book posters. Particular about the condition of his collection and “ye” who touch it. In Brodie I found an avatar through the world. I never saw myself as a hero on the pages of a comic. But a devoted fan of those heroes. One who dedicated all of my mind to memorizing as much information about these fictional characters and their worlds, as humanly possible. Just like Brodie Bruce. Through Brodie I also saw hope. Hope of one day having more than one friend. Hope of one day falling in love. Hope of making good decisions that would lead to a successful life. And one with meaning. Because around the adolescent age of 11, I struggled with the meaning of life. More specifically my own. I haven’t stopped watching Mallrats since I found that tape in 2001 at a failed video store. To this day it still gives me hope. And so, you’ll have to forgive me while I apply that hope to another shot at getting your attention. Working on a View Askew comic, for you is one of my top three goals in this life. I’m not here looking for the paycheck of it all. No sir, I just want to be part of the world you created. The one that gave me hope. The one that STILL keeps me going, even on my worst days. When I revisit any of your View Askewniverse films, I am happy. I would kill for the shot to play a small part, in getting to pencil one of your comics. I’ve drawn a few cover concepts inspired by your work. For submission to you, for your consideration. Again, forgive me. As this won’t be the last I try to get in touch with you. Or the last of the pieces I draw for your consideration. There’s no amount of work I won’t do, to get that shot. Forgive the shameless tagging of people in your circle that I will continue to do. In hopes that someone pushes my messages your way. Because dreams are worth clawing for.
