Rodgers (not his real name) says they were recruited by a Russian national identified as Dimitri (see Frame 3), who promised them jobs such as cleaning, driving, and other casual work. Instead, upon arrival, they were subjected to just three weeks of forced training and deployed straight to the frontline. They were promised over UGX 100 million. The money was reportedly deposited onto their accounts, only to later disappear under unclear circumstances. Who had access to their accounts? Who withdrew the money? Frame 1 shows a letter from the Minister of Youth, @BalaamBarugahar addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighting complaints from families of those affected. The same letter references the arrest of Dimitri here in Uganda, yet he was later released under unclear circumstances. Frame 2 contains another letter addressed to the Prime Minister @RobinahNabbanja raising the same concerns. Frame 4 includes part of a list of Ugandans currently in Russia who have reportedly been pushed to the frontline with little to no proper military training, only used as expendable shields. The Ugandan Embassy in Russia says that it can only act upon authorization from the Ugandan government. Unfortunately, there appears to be little to no urgency or action from home. Even if we assumed that these individuals knowingly signed contracts, this is a matter of life and death. They should have the right to terminate such agreements. It is the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens and ensure their safe return. Notably, about 50 Kenyans who were taken under similar circumstances have already been repatriated. Save Ugandans in Russia. @adoniaayebare @NkunyingiMuwad1 @JoelSsenyonyi

I have just received a disturbing call from Rodgers, an Ugandan currently stranded in Russia. He spoke to me in tears. According to him, many Ugandans who traveled to Russia in search of better opportunities have instead found themselves forcibly deployed to the frontline in the Russia–Ukraine War. He says that about 50 of his fellow Ugandans have already lost their lives right before his eyes. Rodgers only managed to communicate because he was temporarily returned to Russia for treatment after falling ill on the frontline. He now fears that he will soon be sent back. What is even more concerning is that, despite repeated attempts to seek help from the Uganda Embassy in Moscow, he says no assistance has been provided. Meanwhile, he says that other countries, such as Kenya, have successfully repatriated their citizens through their embassies. He is crying out for help to the government of Uganda and whoever can intervene and save the lives of Ugandans in Russia. @adoniaayebare @Thomas_Tayebwa @Winnie_Byanyima

Did You Know? Reports and testimonies indicate that African recruits within the Russian army have been labeled as "disposable" or treated as cannon fodder. According to experts, this reflects their deployment to high-risk frontline positions, where they are exposed to high casualty rates. After being deceived into being sent to the war front against their will, these Africans are used as human shields, demonstrating a total disregard for their human dignity. Dear African youth, do not be fooled any longer by fake online job offers like Alabuga Start, which promise excellent treatment. What actually awaits you is to be used as cannon fodder.
