It’s ironic that people keep advocating for an enforceable salary cap in college sports while not being in favor of employment for athletes. Will never have one without the other.
Mike Rodak@mikerodak

Nick Saban to @finebaum calls for an "equilibrium" among CFB teams' spending: "One team shouldn't have a $40 million roster and another team have a $5 million roster, and they're out there playing each other. There should be some kind of -- every league, NFL, basketball, hockey -- they all have a salary cap or something that creates parity in the league so everybody has an equal opportunity to win." It should be noted that pro sports' salary caps are part of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) between players' unions and the leagues, which if adopted in college sports would involve players as employees -- something the NCAA and conferences have resisted.

Got Whit Babcock's three-year AD emeritus contract from the #Hokies. Looks like through 2029, he'll make $2.96 million. Year 1: $1,150,842 base salary with bonus and deferred comp worth $312,500. Year 2: $900,000 salary Year 3: $600,000 salary

@MarcEdelman Employers cannot collude to artificially restrict employment in their profession. That's illegal. Which also means you can't set transfer limits. You can't set 4-5 yr eligibility reqs. You can't stop professional athletes who already spent 4 years in the ncaa from coming back 3/3

Really excited to slide over to the TV booth for one game and call JMU/VT baseball on ACCNX with my good friend Andrew Wells. Our first game together was March 29, 2019. Series opener between Clemson and Virginia Tech. Some freshman named @NickBiddison did this?!

@Mr704intheQC @AaronGogley @RacketRockRoll Charlottes struggles date way before this current era. You are attributing to NIL what is really subpar leadership and poor coaching hires. No reason that program shouldn’t be more competitive. There’s a path to CBA, doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.

No CBA helps because ultimately that leads to full employment which will erode the academic requirements. Not to mention no players are going to agree to anything that limits their compensation or the duration of their compensation. And yes when MM can't hold on to any talent they develop it makes it harder for them to win and it makes it so donors and season ticket holders walk away. I had season tickets in Charlotte basketball for 30 years and this environment has done what losing couldn't - pushed me away. Watching a new roster every year is not something I am interested in - even IF we win a single season its back to square 1 the next year. Players not caring about my school or school in general is not something I am interested. I can watch professional sports if thats what I want - its better. There is literally no reason to invest fiscally or emotionally in college athletics.

You Just NeEd MoRe FunDiNg Freakin 🤡 Schools were already relying on student fees and institutional support just to keep sports solvent. Then people like Mitt and Jay create an environment where donors for all but a few schools quit donating and buying tickets because their team can’t win and there is no relationship with players now. Then he has balls to say you just need new funding sources. You don’t hate these people enough.
Mit Winter@WinterSportsLaw

This👇 You don’t have to price fix college athlete pay to fund college Olympic sports programs. People need to move past that old mindset. If schools want to fund all teams at current levels the answer is new funding. Could be the university side or other sources.

@Mr704intheQC @AaronGogley @RacketRockRoll idk if it's the case that mid majors have a harder time winning. in the old system the money disparity was all in facilities, coaching salaries+support staff. mit's argument (and mine) isn't that regulation is bad inherently, just needs to be done legally.

You say that jokingly but the reality is the current situation makes it pointless for the majority of schools to invest and sponsor sports. If we can't win, can't build anything, cant develop relationships with players and ultimately education doesn't matter - then why buy tickets or donate? Schools like Michigan don't care but they are the anomaly not the standard.

@DeferredWalkOn @AaronGogley @RacketRockRoll Parity? No. A shot at glory? Yes. My school will never retire another jersey. Ever. We may never have another NFL draft pick. Why should i donate or buy tickets to that?

@Mr704intheQC @AaronGogley @RacketRockRoll CCU played for a baseball natty two years ago. Indiana, UVa and Texas Tech all had their best seasons ever in FB. They never would have in the old system. In the 2010s we had Bama and Clemson trading the title every year. Stop with the fake nostalgia. There’s never been parity

Is basketball? A chance at a final 4, in baseball recent tittle, in soccer recent titles, there were plenty of chances and opportunities. We have made it exponentially more difficult in everything. Stories like App and Boise have become more difficult. Also another B10 team winning just backs up our position.

@RacketRockRoll @Mr704intheQC He says that but on the other hand says “obviously the schools pay because they think it is worth it.” It ignores the fundamental problem which is a zero sum game. At least under the old system all schools had some chance. But now only the richest do.

Let the record show that the Virginia Tech softball press/support staff contingent named 41 of the 47 countries in Europe in less than 10 minutes. Back to business: Still hoping for a 5 p.m. start. The game will shift to the ESPN app (ACCNX). It's starting to drizzle a bit more.

@AndyBitterVT @G_Wimb maybe it happens in corporate america too but college athletic departments love giving people meaningless titles to soothe over a transition

@G_Wimb Here's guessing that's more of an honorary title than anything. The release was very vague. Feels like a soft landing deal more than anything.
