Yes. And I would say it is worst with neurological stuff. As a therapist, I am seeing people come into my office already convinced of certain diagnoses, such as ADHD, autism, or "neurospicy." They diagnosed themselves based on what they see on social media or what their friends are saying / doing (conformity, one-upmanship); they are not seeking help to be assessed and then treated, but they want the therapist to "affirm" and "validate" these diagnoses, a lot of times asking me for notes to be presented at work / school to get special treatment because they "have a condition." Little do they know that ACTUAL ADHD is a profound neurological disorder, as is autism, in its many shapes and forms. It's not just being quirky, or special, or not being able to focus due to lack of discipline or motivation. It's hard to educate these people bc they get offended and defensive any time a therapist questions these ideas they hold about themselves. Then there is "trauma." That concept has been stretched to unbelievable limits. Everything is a trauma. Funny thing is, survivors of REAL trauma (for example, Holocaust) have often go on to lead meaningful, functional lives. Nowadays, a person has a nasty boyfriend (which they chose, btw) or someone looks at them the wrong way in the supermarket, and it's a trauma that necessitates endless therapy sessions and special treatment. I have only had 2 clients who had actual PTSD that fit the DSM criteria (yes, there are actual criteria, which these clients have no clue about, and usually get very disappointed when they are presented with them). The two clients with real PTSD were both in law enforcement and witnessed / were part of horrendous situations. The law enforcement people that these snowflakes are likely protest or spit on.
