@LanceMcAlister Agreed. If it’s a ball it should be a ball. If it’s a strike it should be a strike. Wimbledon has gone to this. Get the calls right.

I've changed my mind. I've always been in favor of MLB's new Automated Ball-Strike system. I'm for getting calls right. I've really enjoyed the strategy that has evolved with the system. But I've changed my mind on ABS. I think we've the plot.
My initial thought on ABS was that it would correct the obvious and egregious calls. Call it the 'Angel Hernandez governor.'
What I did not anticipate was the number of razor thin decisions that would be challenged.
But the tool has made it too much about the umpires. We are now celebrating/mocking when an umpire is being challenged and shown to be wrong multiple times in a game. This isn't me being an apologist for guys like CB Bucknor. Rather it's about the fact we have the technology to decide the status of a pitch that is moving at 100+ mph with a dramatic break sideways, or down. A pitch that may ultimately be 0.01 of an inch in/out of the strike zone.
So, I've changed my mind. Use ABS all the time. On every pitch. This should be about getting all the pitches correct. Not about exposing umpires.
I get it, I get the anticipation and rush of a challenge. The process is quick, sleek, and comes with a visual element on the scoreboard. It's fun. I cheered with GABP crowd when Bucknor had his bad day earlier in the season.
But as currently implemented, ABS has created a subsystem:
Criticism of umpires for missing a pitch. The system should be about getting all the calls correct.
Leading up to this season, I'd pointed to the 2025 umpire accuracy rate of nearly 94%, an all-time high. I didn't think that called for ABS to make all the calls. I saw the system as a correction tool for a very small number of pitches.
Now, I believe we should use ABS on every pitch. Get every pitch right. We have the technology. Don't pick and choose when to use it.
The umpires have an earpiece. With this change, they'd simply instantly relay the decision on every pitch. They'd still certainly serve a purpose behind the plate. They have check swings, hit by pitch, plays at the plate, etc.
Heck, Matt McLain struck out looking to end last night's game on an obvious ball. He didn't challenge it, because he couldn't challenge it. The Reds were out of challenges. The more I think about all of this, the sillier that aspect seems.
Again, I love ABS. I want to keep using ABS. I just want to tweak ABS.
Thoughts?

@RedsDaily4 Can it go Elly, Sal, ghost runners, Elly, Sal, ghost runners etc?
English

@LndsPatterson Downs or Bain. If they’re both there….ummmm….Downs? And pray Stewart isn’t the bust I fear he is.

@ThePostCincy Love the moonshot, but realistically, he never plays and would be astronomically expensive.

Chat — how do we feel about this 👀

🇧🇷 Sources: FC Cincinnati engage Neymar's camp on preliminary talks. Very preliminary. Still internal discussions at club about whether to push for the global superstar... but Cincy is gauging Neymar's interest/requirements. w/ @PaulTenorio nytimes.com/athletic/71842…

@fraggrrr @BengalYouTube Michigan’s mercenaries looked like G-league to me.

@BengalYouTube basketball has the best arguement for having the smallest gap between college and the pros
English

I think we can call agree it's not basketball
DUBBY@DubDotDUBBY
The gap between college and the pros has to be the largest in basketball

@CharlieG__ There HAVE to be better back-up catchers the Reds could’ve signed to put in their system, no???
English

Francona on Trevino: He flew back this morning. He’ll he examined in the morning. It’s his mid back. It reared its head in spring training. He felt like he calmed it down, but it got to the point where he catches and he goes back to where he was. Hopefully he just misses…
He’s eligible to return on the 15th

@RedsDaily4 We haven’t hit with RISP yet this season. What’s the average if you back out Sal? Might be UNDER .100!
English

Reds lose.
- Lowder wasn’t his best
- 0-10 with RISP
- Defense was horrible
- Left 11 on base.
5-2 road trip. Onto the Angels!

@yuggs513 Can’t we use the DH for him and let the pitcher bat?

Today is a day where Hayes discussion will be heavy.
Reminder when discussing KeyBryan Hayes you need to discuss him in the context of him being the 4th highest paid player on the Reds.
No one is saying defense doesn’t have value (at least I’m not). He’s great defensively, is he that valuable to eat up 8 million dollars of your payroll until 2029.
That’s always been the discussion. That’s always been the issue

@willielutz_ Ant have a RF who can’t hit when we insist on playing a 3B that can’t hit. Live today’s lineup.

Ke’Bryan Hayes is 6 for his last 74 going back to Sep 13th of last year.
That’s an .081 batting average and he has 0 extra base hits across those 28 games.

@RedsDaily4 LOVE this lineup. Let’s remove guys hitting below .100
English

@TristanEmmons27 @vancemeek Not gone, but maybe long relief???? Maybe?!
English

@bryce_spalding How long is his leash?!? We can’t have a right fielder who can’t hit when we insist on playing a third baseman who can’t hit!
English

@DeimlingDrew Call up JJ and Rece and send down Marte and Benson
