In Japan, children clean their own schools.
Every day. After lunch.
About twenty minutes.
Classrooms.
Hallways.
Toilets.
Not because the schools are too poor
to hire someone.
Because in 1947, this country decided
that cleaning your own space
is part of becoming a person.
The cleaning rag
is on the school supply list.
Right next to the pencils.
Egypt teaches it now.
So does Indonesia.
So does Mongolia.
Think about the last time
you watched a seven-year-old
mop a floor without complaining.
Japan does that

in the country.

This school board just unanimously voted that toilet training other people's children is now a staff responsibility at their public schools. Not kids who need special accommodations. ALL the kids. What is a parent's job now exactly? What can parents reliably be expected to do?

Dramatically reduce laptop use, bring back hard copy textbooks, handwritten assignments, teacher lectures and written notes, accountability for deadlines, removing chronically disruptive kids who are taking away from other students, and ban cell phones.

This was a quote from a school library who’s upset about staffing cuts. While I don’t want to see anyone lose their job, and I 100% believe it’s a school’s responsibility to teach literacy and math, I part ways with this librarian at “raising them (students) to become global citizens”.
American public schools should be teaching and preparing students to be well-informed, active AMERICAN citizens who can engage with the global community.
The library is definitely part of this process, but only if librarians are on board with the mission.
P.S. Staffing cuts are inevitable for a lot of school districts in the near future. People should make sure their role is essential.
