@OnthisdayRN @RoyalNavy I was aboard Arrow and on the upper deck that day right up until Sheffield had to abandon ship, majority of her crew jumped aboard and some jumped into the icy 🌊 to extinguish their burns before being pulled out. I've returned since to pay respects at memorial on sealion Island

#OnThisDay 1982 HMS SHEFFIELD is hit by Argentine Exocet becoming the first @RoyalNavy ship lost in action since 1945. Though the missile did not detonate it started fires that killed 20 sailors. 260 were rescued by HMS ARROW. SHEFFIELD later sank under tow #remember

She was built by Vickers-Armstrongs, Barrow, Lancashire and launched on 25 March 1944. So far she has been the only ship of the Royal Navy(RN) to bear the name Trump. She spent the majority of her life attached to the 4th Submarine Squadron based in Australia. She was kept in service following the war and was refitted for greater underwater performance, and was the final RN submarine to be posted in Australia, departing in January 1969. She was sold off and broken up for scrap in August 1971.

A teacher is accused of sexually abusing and murdering a baby boy he and his partner were trying to adopt. Jamie Varley, 37, allegedly sent messages calling the child “dead meat” and even joked about killing him just days after the baby was placed in his care. The boy, Preston Davey, had been taken from his biological mother shortly after birth and later placed with Varley and his boyfriend, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, after their adoption application was approved. Preston died aged just 13 months, on July 27, 2023—only four months after moving into their home. In one message to his sister, Varley reportedly wrote: “He’s dead meat… he didn’t sleep last night after 11.30pm. Up every 1.5 hours.” Days later, after sending a video of Preston in a baby walker, he allegedly replied: “This was before he was murdered and put to bed.” Varley denies all charges. The case is now before the court. A child taken into care for protection… and dead within months. My heart literally breaks for what this poor little baby boy had to go through before he was my murdered. The court will decide the outcome… but the bigger question is how this situation was ever allowed to happen.

The teenager’s mother said she was scared to leave the house after the incident. At Barkingside Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, Gould was sentenced to 22 weeks imprisonment suspended for two years.
