@JOttoPohl1 Have you read Alan Furst's 'Dark Star'? He's Jewish so has his biases but I enjoyed it, 15 years ago. Main character works for NKVD, goes on the run, discovers a dossier about an Okhrana agent now in the Bolshevik high command.

It is often not explained well. But, the original leadership of the Cheka, GPU, OGPU, and NKVD was heavily based on a network based on the old Pale of Settlement (former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). Hence it had a disproportionate number of Poles, Latvians, and Jews in its leadership. The first two heads, Derzhinsky and Menzhinsky were Polish. Then dejure number two and defacto head of the OGPU, Yagoda became head of the NKVD in 1934. Stalin broke this network first by appointing Yezhov head of the NKVD in 1936 to conduct the Great Terror and then Beria to purge the NKVD itself in 1938. Yezhov was a transitional figure. He came from the old Pale of Settlement (Vilnius), but was from outside the NKVD and was half Russian and half Lithuanian. He initially maintained many of the men from the Menzhinsky and Yagoda administrations. After his replacement with Beria in November 1938 many of these men were removed and replaced with members of a new network that was geographically and ethnically more diverse. Beria's network was largely based in the southern part of the European USSR and had a disproportionate number of people from the Transcaucasus. So the NKVD leadership became more Georgian, Armenian, Russian, and Ukrainian and less Polish, Latvian, and Jewish. But, there was never a total purge of Jews from the NKVD and the leadership was far from ever being completely Russian.

I am a strong proponent of the 'annoying' framing. I have advanced it independently and fully endorse it. There's no better response to their 'hate' narrative.
