@MsMelChen Depends on which part of Scotland? The lowlands generally kind of more or less true depending on the period. The Highlands not at all. They had brutal things like the Highland clearances. History tends to be complicated.

Okay, this might stir up a hornet’s nest… At first, I thought Scotland’s 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 habit of cheering for whoever England plays - even Argentina - was just banter. But now I’m not so sure. It feels like it runs much deeper. What I find truly intriguing is how some Scottish nationalists blame English identity (and often the English people collectively) for British colonialism, while painting Scotland as its very first victim. Yet many Scots were enthusiastic participants in the empire, often serving as key figures in its ruling elite. After the 1707 Union, Scotland’s educated middle class, military tradition, and economic pressures pushed many talented Scots into imperial service. They excelled in law, engineering, medicine, and administration. Scots comprised roughly one-third of colonial governors-general in the later Victorian/Edwardian era. They were disproportionately represented in colonial governance, the military, and civil service, making up a significant portion of governors, administrators, and officials relative to Scotland’s population. Scots were prominent as governors in the Carribean, India, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaya, and African colonies. They also dominated roles in the East India Company and later imperial services. Rather than acknowledging Scotland’s active role, the narrative often shifts to claims of “internalised Anglo-phobia” or some sort of Stockholm syndrome. It’s as if Scotland was forced into complicity like Django Unchained’s ‘Stephen,’ the loyal house slave who sides with the master. The reality seems simpler. Scotland fought bravely, eventually lost, joined the winning side, and then did rather well out of the arrangement - certainly better than most of the world’s colonized peoples. Am I wrong?

Vor ein paar Jahren erzählte ich einem katholischen Flüchtlingshelfer, daß ich ein sehr schönes Buch über den Deutschen Orden gelesen hatte. Seine Reaktion darauf: "Oh, die Kreuzzüge... auch ein dunkles Kapitel des Christentums. Bemerkenswert ist, daß der Islam damals eine sehr friedliche Religion war." Ich musste ihn kurz daran erinnern, daß den Kreuzzügen eine massive Expansion des Islams vorausgegangen war, die bekanntlich ein Gebiet umfasste, das sich von Indien bis nach Spanien erstreckte. Die Kreuzritter mußten im Vergleich "lediglich" das Byzantinische Reich vor den sunnitischen Seldschuken schützen und die Heiligen Stätten zurückerobern. Seine Aufwertung des Islams und seine Abwertung des Christentums waren daher völlig unsinnig. Wie konnte es dazu kommen, daß selbst Christen derart krasse Verzerrungen verinnerlichen? Auch darum geht es in diesem Buch.

Beide Regime waren auf ihre Art einzigartig Das NS-Regime führte in Mitteleuropa eine industrielle Völkervernichtung durch, die es so vorher nicht gab. Die Sowjetunion etablierte ein fast einmaliges polizeiliches Terrorsystem gegen das eigene Volk, welches völlig willkürlich war

The Daemonculaba is definitely peak 40K in being cartoonishly grimdark. However I will say that this type of grimdark has no effect on me bc of how over the top it is. It doesn’t disturb me. It makes me cringe. It’s the same as Berserk with it’s cartoon villains making it really hard to take serious. But 40K has the excuse that it’s not meant to be totally serious all the time so I agree that the Daemonculaba is peak grimdark tho it is also the reason why I don’t love grimdark myself.

@DerDieDas32 If he wanted to do a Mereen plotline it should’ve been in the first arc (1-3) otherwise she should’ve been in Westeros in the second arc (5-7). He could’ve also shown her ruling in Westeros if he wanted to explore “Aragon’s tax policy”

Can I just say George is soo irresponsible with the Mereen plotline 😭 on paper it’s good but it takes her so far away from the main story and establishing anti-slavery institutions would take a lifetime in Essos. It’s so hard to get her to Westeros in a satisfying way

Comparing interwar Lithuania to Abkhazia is ahistorical. Lithuania had a functioning government, army, diplomatic service, concluded international treaties, and joined the League of Nations in 1921. Abkhazia has never enjoyed anything close to that level of international legitimacy or independence. The claim that the Republic of Lithuania had "nothing" connecting it to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is equally false. The Lithuanian nation founded the Grand Duchy, Vilnius was its historic capital for centuries, and the modern republic deliberately adopted its symbols and historical legacy.
