the big stew has always been with us, a dark pulse under the surface, a murky song that hums beneath our skin. we are bound to it, each of us, like roots twisted in black soil, too deep to pull free. we will throw ourselves into it piece by piece

@PleasantKenobi It's a shame we keep going back to not only Ravnica, but like the same part of Ravnica, when the geopolitical and Geological landscapes of Alara are so interesting

Shards of Alara is an INSANE set when you look back on it. I've been thinking a lot about Magic's derivative aesthetics, worlds, themes - and Alara is just so wild and interesting. Take me back.

@PleasantKenobi Lastly, ranting. J Robert King is a hack and with the exception of "The Thran" (still very problematic) every book he wrote was of poor quality and damaged the overall narrative of MtG. He is the reason Karona, False God canonically caused a orgy of rabbits in a field of pudding.

@PleasantKenobi @Spice8Rack 1 off recommendations, Ashes of the Sun, Best HP book, and the Greensleeves trilogy is good campy fun. The anthology books of this era are also neat little stories from when the game was just a game. Moons of Mirrodin got me into MTG. Kamigawa was good too.

GW made their Warhammer lore into an entirely separate profitable product line of novels. Why did Magic struggle to do this? What is it about Magic's world that never managed to make it to a TV show like Yugioh, or an New York Times best selling novel series like 40k?
