This was at Goldman Sachs Recruitment Day in 2019, at Victoria Island, Lagos (similar to Shell's Recruitment Day).
I didn't make the cut then because there were badder guys from UNILAG, OAU and co, who were and are witches and wizards in coding.
Anyway, my team came second overall and I used sweet mouth to present our technical solution.
This was Goldman Sachs o, able to assemble at least 200 bad guys within Lagos (the picture doesn't show the full hall, which is quite sizeable).
But one bros who knows the local ecosystem more than oyinbo said we don't have world-class talent.
Anyway, most people in this picture had sponsored flight and relocation benefits to the UK and other countries shortly after this picture was taken.
However, you still have people like this within Nigeria's shores.

Tomi is an American by birth. There’s a student loan for children abroad. There’s provision for kids in America. Student loans are available for kids; even me I haven’t finished paying my student loan. Nice try! Illiteracy is a serious issue. Education is not a scam. 😂😂

@Crownzdesigns @mac_smat Refineries under NNPC have been neglected for decades. After endless “turnaround maintenance” with little results, it’s hard not to see the chronic failure as deliberate sabotage that keeps Nigeria dependent on imported fuel and exposed to global price shocks.

@mac_smat Nigeria does extract crude oil, most of which is produced and controlled by international oil companies because our refineries aren’t functional, we still lack full control over our own oil and end up importing fuel. Like I said before, the fault lies with our own

Nigeria is a major oil producing nation, yet it seems our government isn’t leveraging that advantage effectively, we still import fuel despite having crude, and we lack sufficient domestic reserves. So how is the ongoing war affecting our economy when we have our own oil resources? Specifically, what has happened to our oil production capacity and strategic reserves, and why aren’t we using them to meet local demand? 🤦🏻♀️

“She’s in Nigeria, $5K should be enough” sound likes those UK clients that tell you— “I know $200 is a lot of money in Nigeria and you want to charge that for a social media design.” So because I’m from Nigeria, and $200 is a lot when converted, I now have a limit?

Na so Nigerian designer twitter be. Many of you have never been on the hiring side. Trust me: if I have a Ui/UX problem, I hire a designer to fix it, and my problem get solved, in this era of AI, you’ll be disposable on the spot. I rarely keep designers in a product team after 2 months (post launch). It’s a waste of money to keep them around.

Whenever I come across posts like these, I immediately know that the author not a UX designer or they are freelance designers working on small/insignificant pronlems. Serious products used by billions or millions are still being designed by whole design departments. Don't joke.

That’s because UI/UX is overrated. And founders are clocking this of late. When you design a fine app finish and you don’t have money to market it, or people aren't paying, the designers are the first batch of hires to get fired, so he/she is useless. So my advice is: start pivoting to product management, product marketing, distribution, sales or growth.

If you’re serious about landing your next big gig, here are 3 things that will quietly position you ahead of everyone else 👇🏾
Create a weekly content system.
Don’t just “post when you feel inspired.”
Use Claude Ai to help you generate 3 solid LinkedIn post ideas every week that showcase your thinking, your experience, and how you solve problems. Remove open to work batch from your profile please.
If you are targeting international roles, go to @clevabanking and open a USD account ahead of time (Very Important). Opportunities move fast.
Use Saturday or Sunday to write your posts for the week.
Then schedule them to go live on this days.
Monday: 8–10AM (people checking LinkedIn before or at work)
Wednesday: 8–10AM or around 12PM
Friday: 8–9AM (morning performs better than late afternoon)
Early mornings and lunch hours generally outperform very early posts (like 5–6AM) or late evening post.
Mind you, this is not about going viral. This is you playing the visibility game properly. And visibility, over time, creates leverage.
Position yourself before you need the opportunity.

Most freelancers lose money because they act too professional.
A client hires you to do a simple $60 design. You deliver, get paid, and end the conversation with “Thank you.” Then walk away. This is a big mistake that a lot of people repeat. You’re loosing more money.
We forget that many of these clients are just very busy people who need a lot of stress lifted from them.
Instead of closing the chat, start a qualifying conversation. Pitch yourself properly. Suggest additional services the client actually needs.
Do some quick research on their business based on the flyer, post, or design you just worked on. Look at their brand, their competitors, their audience, and their gaps. Then propose monthly design packages that help them grow and drive sales.
This is what separates freelancers who know how to sell from average freelancers who only know how to deliver.
A $60 flyer design can easily turn into a $1,200 monthly retainer, but only if you play it right.
