The city then told her she was responsible for cleaning up the rubble because the demolition had been done without a permit. Susan Hodgson had owned the property on Perkerson Road in Atlanta for decades. The house had been vacant and boarded up for about 15 years, but the taxes were paid, the grass was regularly cut, and the home held memories of her late husband. She was away on vacation when a construction crew showed up and tore it to the ground. A neighbour confronted the workers and was reportedly told to mind her own business. Hodgson sent a family member to the property, who demanded to see the demolition permit. The person overseeing the work checked the address, and admitted they had demolished the wrong house entirely. The company left behind a massive pile of rubble and never contacted Hodgson, never offered to fix anything, and never reached back out. Then it got worse. Atlanta city officials placed a correction notice on the lot, citing the demolition as having been completed without a permit, and informed Hodgson that she was responsible for bringing the property back into compliance. The city was effectively holding her accountable for a crime committed against her. "A company destroyed her home by mistake, and she was left holding the bill," her attorney said. Hodgson filed a lawsuit against the construction company.
