A win for John Ochilo, who claimed to be the son of former President Mwai Kibaki and sought inclusion in the succession of Kibaki’s wealth. The High Court cleared the way for a DNA test to proceed. However, the legal process has been delayed by several appeals and technicalities over the “purity” of the samples and who should undergo the testing. As of now, the case is still ongoing. Although the court has shown willingness to use DNA evidence to settle the matter, no final ruling has been made to legally confirm or deny Ochilo’s paternity claim. The Kibaki family continues to oppose Ochilo’s inclusion in the succession proceedings. Ochilo said he was born in 1960. He claimed that his mother met Kibaki in the late 1950s, when Kibaki had returned from studying at the London School of Economics and was teaching at Makerere University in Uganda before joining Kenyan politics. According to Ochilo, his mother and Kibaki were in a long-term relationship and not just a brief affair. He alleged that his mother was well known to the former president. Ochilo also claimed that Kibaki financially supported his upbringing and education. He further stated that the late president privately acknowledged him as his son and that they met several times over the years.
