On this day in April 1994, during the Genocide against the Tutsi, over 250,000 Tutsi were killed in a single day. The killings happened in 34 locations across the southern prefectures of Gitarama, Gikongoro and Butare. Listen to the podcast: open.spotify.com/episode/7iJi01… #Kwibuka31

I remember the day a machete struck my head— Not because of anything I did, But simply because I was born a Tutsi. I survived. But my cousin, Marie Ange Mukunzi, did not. She was taken— A life full of laughter, hope, and dreams, Cut short. Today, I remember her. I remember the children we hid with. I remember the faces whose names I never learned— Those lost in silence, in terror, in unimaginable pain. Those taken across Rwanda, in places where the world wasn’t watching. I speak because they can’t. I live because I survived. But I carry their memory with me—every single day. Ange, and all of you, You are not forgotten. You are not gone. You live on in us. I remember. Always. #Kwibuka31 #AngeMukunzi #NeverForgotten #StillAlive

Remembering my neighbors and childhood friends In this photo, Cyicyi places his hand on Poussette’s head. Diane Uwera stands behind Emery. These four siblings from the Muhiza family in Gatagara were all killed and thrown into their family’s latrine during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. I am grateful to Charlotte, their eldest sister who survived and now lives in the USA, for sharing this precious photo as she knows how I am connected to them. After my family survived the Bagogwe massacre in 1992, we relocated to Gatagara, in Nyanza District where we became close neighbors with the Muhiza family. I attended the same primary school as Cyicyi and Diane , we walked to and from school together. Like many children, they enjoyed teasing me and starting conversations just to hear me speak, amused by my northern Kinyarwanda accent. Every word I said made them laugh. They would even joke that I wasn’t Rwandan, calling me “Mukiga.” Even as children, Cyicyi and Uwera were curious. They used to ask me what the Interahamwe looked like, as Gatagara was then dominated by opposition parties like PL, PSD, and MDR, before the rise of the extremist faction. Just days later, Cyicyi, Uwera, Poussette, and Emery would witness the unimaginable cruelty of the Interahamwe as former members of PL and MDR had transformed into “pawa,” indistinguishable from the Interahamwe and CDR members. Muhiza, an entrepreneur originally from Gikongoro, was married to two sisters. Together with his two wives and their seven children, he was brutally murdered during the genocide. We will always remember your faces. #Kwibuka31

I watched Samuel Ishimwe’s powerful documentary #ReclaimingHistory last year, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to understand the depth of colonial efforts to divide us. It is a must-watch! #Kwibuka31
Digital Commemoration@DigitalKwibuka

Join us this Saturday April 12, 6PM at Cine Mayaka by @Imitanaprod, for a screening of the film "Reclaiming History" by Samuel Ishimwe & Matthias Frickel. The film explores the colonial roots of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director, reflecting on the themes explored in the documentary. #Kwibuka31
