A timely conversation as the world sits at a point of #rupture 🌍 A pleasure to reconnect with H.E. @AmbChina2NZ Xiaolong🇨🇳🇳🇿 We discussed the state of the world. In a fractured world, the NZ–China relationship, built over decades, remains strong. @diplosphere @distantKiwi

A mini-Davos at Raumati Beach 🌊 — diplomacy over a BBQ 🍗🔥 Great to reconnect with H.E. Viktor Vavricka @SwissAmbNZ, and family 🇨🇭🇳🇿 His 2024 @diplosphere message still resonates: international law works—but only when words match actions. @distantKiwi

Adieu Mr Bolger 🌿 “We can’t force anybody to do anything... All we can do is lead by intellectual argument and persuasion.” A voice of reason we were fortunate to host @diplosphere. The world needs more statesmen like him. More than ever. #nzpol #NZIndependentForeignPolicy

Here’s the @DavidParkerMP’s Foreign Affairs address at @diplosphere 👇 labour.org.nz/news-navigatin…
Maty Nikkhou-O'Brien@MatyOBrien

Truly the People's House 🇳🇿 Privileged to address @NZParliament—this time virtually from Paris—to introduce Hon @DavidParkerMP's foreign policy speech at @Diplosphere, expertly moderated by @coughlthom. In a time of global disorder, he urged a principled, independent path for NZ.

“If New Zealand opts to remain in Five Eyes it should do so only on the basis that, at the bottom line, intelligence does not make foreign policy, it serves foreign policy; although in the case of the US, and of Australia, intelligence plainly carries the greater weight and has even (as witnessed in the 2004 attack on Iraq) been expediently concocted in ways to justify war. Five Eyes is not a formal alliance treaty; it is an expedient arrangement between intelligence agencies to exchange information. At times of intense rivalry between the great powers it should be no surprise that information shared by the US, given its robust rivalry with China, should reflect its compulsive priority. In those circumstances New Zealand should commit formally as well to widen exchanges of intelligence with Asia-Pacific partners.” The (global) response to COVID-19 cannot reinforce confidence that international cooperation will be readily secured unless a fundamental change of heart occurs in the emerging rivalry between the US and China. This is the space wherein New Zealand needs to retain evenhandedness and the essential logic of a distinctive small-power contribution of the kind displayed through its non-nuclear policy, which remains an eminently rational and respectable hallmark of New Zealand's approach towards foreign affairs.” Terence O’Brien (NZ Diplomat) - Consolations of Insignificance

At an event in Wellington this week, Beijing’s ambassador has pitched China as the antithesis of US turmoil to a Wellington crowd. It was a well-timed message. Read about the ambassador’s speech, PM Luxon’s response, and what China expert Jason Young thinks, on The Post.
