I was laid off as Asia editor of the Washington Post today. It was an absolute privilege to work with people who are not only incredible journalists but also wonderful humans. My heart breaks for everyone who lost their job today - and for the readers who will be the worse for it

Mike is a supremely talented journalist, a beautiful writer who brought Australia in all its dimensions alive for our readers. Selfishly, I would love to keep him in Sydney so I can keep reading him. Australian editors please take note!

Today The Washington Post closed its Seoul hub, where I was working as an assignment editor. We lost about a dozen journalists in that one moment, and over the last day or so we lost so many more. Hundreds of talented journalists, the best of the best. Darkest day of my career.

The Post gave me confidence at a time when I was still finding it. My colleagues took me in like family and gave me the opportunities to tell stories of Taiwan beyond just cross-strait tensions. I wish nothing but the best for my amazing colleagues. They truly deserve better.

I wake up every morning trying to scoop the NYT, not praise it. But wanted to thank so many great reporters — @CAKitchener @amarimow @SherylNYT among them — who I spotted holding signs like this in front of Post headquarters today. (Maybe the NYT is ok after all.)

Christian is a brilliant analyst and thinker about China, with phenomenal Chinese. I learned so much from him while having the honour of being his editor. This puzzling world needs his insights more than ever.
