Our latest Bird of the Week stands out from its North American cousins with its bright red face. It's a bird of the SW, living in high-elevation forests—a preference for mature forests make it vulnerable to logging. Seen a Red-faced Warbler lately? bit.ly/3scH9Ev

Ever had a bad hair day? Well, birds can have the equivalent with a "bad feather" day—or even a "no feather" day. At this time of year, birds are molting, & it can leave them looking a bit awkward, and even bald. Find out more in our Question of the Week: bit.ly/2SDs65R

Today's #FeelGoodFriday post features this sweet progression of a Cedar Waxwing nest. Cedar Waxwings breed in the woodlands of northern North America; nest construction takes 5-6 days and may require more than 2,500 individual trips to the nest! 📷: K. J.

This map maker wasn't familiar with the true length and shape of the #FingerLakes but its an interesting look at how European colonizers viewed #Haudenosaunee territory and waterways in the mid-1600s.

50 years earlier this notable 1656 map, by Nicolas Sanson, displays the burgeoning French knowledge of the #GreatLakes region, with both Superior & Michigan ("Lac de Puans") open ended in the west, while Huron is "Karegnondi," a Wyandot word for "Freshwater Sea." #HarvardLibrary

Targeted, short-term flooding of fields can bring a triple benefit: creating food for migrating shorebirds, reducing nutrient overloading in the Gulf of Mexico, and increasing crop yields. A great example of #conservation and #agriculture working together. allaboutbirds.org/news/flooding-…
