During the late-1960s creation of the man-made Seven Seas Lagoon, Imagineers deliberately shaped a square peninsula jutting into the water and paved an access road officially dubbed “Asian Way” just for the planned Asian resort; the name and empty plot survived on maps, signage, and guest literature well into the mid-1980s before being quietly renamed Floridian Way when the Grand Floridian finally claimed the site in 1988.
The original 1971 recorded monorail narration teased the Asian Resort as the next hotel joining the Seven Seas Lagoon circuit alongside the Contemporary and Polynesian, making it the only canceled resort ever promoted directly to real guests before the park even opened. The centerpiece was a 160-foot tower topped by a themed restaurant and lounge offering nighttime dancing and live entertainment in full royal Thai décor.
Two-thirds of the planned 600 rooms were to sit on stilts over the lagoon or in garden settings; beneath the main lobby level was a full subterranean convention center (modeled after the Magic Kingdom’s utilidors) for private access, details so advanced that sample guest-room interiors were actually built as full-scale mock-ups for executive review.
In fact, unlike the Venetian or Persian projects, the Asian Resort had reached hard-construction planning: multiple scale models built, land surveys completed, and Disney’s own 1972 annual report announced “architectural designs soon starting” with a targeted 1974 opening…until the 1973 oil crisis collapsed tourism and forced everything onto the shelf. #WaltDisneyWorld #DisneyFacts

Tokyo's new Space Mountain is one of the most exciting ongoing projects, a new original attraction dreamed up by Imagineering, joining the more recent lineup of originals like Roaring Rapids and Mystic Manor. I hope we see more original attractions during this turbocharging time!
